The Story Behind How Two Actors Created Darth Maul In Solo: A Star Wars Story

When Darth Maul was introduced in Episode I-The Phantom Menace, he was an amalgamation of two performances: Ray Park's onscreen actions and Peter Serafinowicz's voice providing the dialogue. After that film, when Darth Maul turned out to be very much alive, Sam Witwer provided the voice for the character in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels animated series, as well as various video games. When it came time for Darth Maul to return to the big screen for Solo: A Star Wars Story's shocking cameo, the character again became a synthesis of two performances, this time Ray Park and Sam Witwer. The two actors came together to create Darth Maul in a collaborative, back and forth process, as Sam Witwer explained:

I recorded my dialogue, then Ray shot it lip-syncing the dialogue, and then I recorded again to accommodate what Ray did that was, say, different than what I did because, frankly, I think that [director] Ron Howard and them were absolutely right. The way to bring this character to life on the screen is to have both me and Ray have our input and our ability just to have our chance to do what we think should be done.

This is fascinating because you might have expected one performance to entirely dictate the other, but as Sam Witwer told ComicBook.com, both actors were allowed to have their input on Darth Maul in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Ray Park followed Sam Witwer's dialogue, took that and then added some of his own original performance, putting his own spin on things. Then Sam Witwer was able to come back in and see what Ray Park did, and perhaps inspired by that, add some more of his own touch, and ultimately the two performances were fused together.

Ray Park may have originated the character and is the face of him onscreen, but Sam Witwer has played him more than anyone else, so in this way Ron Howard made sure that both actors had their say on what this Darth Maul should be, making him a true synthesis of their performances and uniting Darth Maul's history into one portrayal.

This approach is not only cool on a filmmaking level, it also feels very respectful of Darth Maul's history and the actors who have portrayed him. Darth Maul's very presence in the film acknowledges the in-canon series The Clone Wars and Rebels, where he went on to cause all kinds of problems long after being chopped in half. Having Sam Witwer make the jump to voicing the character in live action is another way to acknowledge that and the fans that followed it. Given that history though, Sam Witwer was actually quite surprised when he was asked to play Darth Maul again, as he recently told CinemaBlend:

I sure wasn't expecting it. It was a little bit of a surprise. Look, it was shock and disbelief. I didn't believe what I was being told, and furthermore, I didn't know the story at the time, so it had to be explained to me what the significance of this whole plot was. And then getting on the phone with Ray Park and sharing our giddiness over the fact that we had the opportunity to do this. But yeah, look, I've publicly said goodbye to the Maul character I think twice. When Clone Wars was over, I think I did a few interviews where I said, 'Ah, it was a wonderful time and I'm saying goodbye to the character.' And then he was back for Rebels. And then after Rebels, he gets killed and I go, 'Well, it was a wonderful run and I'm saying goodbye to the character.' And then Solo...

It sounds like Darth Maul's return to the big screen and the opportunity to work with Ray Park was a welcome one for Sam Witwer, and he was as excited about it as the fans were. Despite his premature exit in The Phantom Menace, fan enthusiasm for Darth Maul has never waned. Sam Witwer may have thought his time as the former Sith was done, given that Obi-Wan finished what he started, but that's the beauty of the Star Wars spinoff films: they can fill in gaps and tell different stories. In turn, the in-canon content that's already out there on the small screen and in comics and books can inform what's on the big screen. That's sort of what happened with Darth Maul's return as a leader of the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate in Solo, as Sam Witwer told CinemaBlend:

I was told, 'Hey, there's red Mandalorian armor on that set for a reason.' Crimson Dawn! Crimson Dawn for a reason. You know, like all of these little hints. There's I believe an old, Sith-looking hologram among Dryden Vos' collection, and all manner of little, nod-of-the-head [things] just nudging you towards who's in control of this criminal empire. And the way that he explained it to me was, 'Look, we were telling a story about a criminal empire. You don't necessarily have a lot of screen time to do that in a movie, you could only give sort of a thumbnail, so why not use the criminal empire that had already been established in many, many episodes of The Clone Wars that Maul established? Why not use that? That makes sense.'

That does make sense and it makes the universe feel more cohesive. It is also a reward for fans who follow the Star Wars universe beyond the films by making it feel like the events in those stories actually matter and have an impact. This only makes it all the more disappointing that Solo's underperformance likely means we won't get a chance to explore more of Darth Maul, Qi'ra and the compelling crime story that relationship seemed to be building towards. But hey, Darth Maul has been dead before, so perhaps, given enough time, we'll see him again.

Oceans 8 May Have More Oceans Cameos Than We Thought

Steven Soderbergh's Ocean's Eleven remake changed the heist genre forever when it debuted back in 2001, and the franchise is about to get a brand new look when Gary Ross' Ocean's 8 debuts later this year. The film will spin off from the male-oriented continuity of the original trilogy to focus on Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) and her new crew of thieves, but that doesn't mean there won't be a few cameos from the team assembled initially by her brother Danny (George Clooney). In fact, Matt Damon recently opened up about his cameo as Linus Caldwell in the upcoming film, and even teased some other familiar faces in the movie, saying:

It's just a very small cameo. I'm not really in the movie a lot. ... I think there are a few of us who pop up really quickly.

It has been over ten years since we last saw Linus Caldwell and the other members of the Ocean's crew walk off at the end of Ocean's Thirteen. Now things are moving to a new crew featuring a new gender, but it seems that Matt Damon and "a few" other key players from the original Steven Soderbergh films will show up to help hand it off, according to what he told The Toronto Sun.

Of course, aside from Matt Damon's tease about his return as Linus Caldwell and the tease of others showing up as well, there are other cameos that we have already reported on in recent months. Chief among these is Carl Reiner, who will similarly return to the Ocean's franchise as veteran thief Saul Bloom. We still don't know who else is slated to return. (For example,Danny Ocean might not be as dead as some think, and George Clooney's status as a producer would make a cameo easy to pull off.) So, we will just have to wait and see.

Out of all the characters who could show up in Ocean's 8, Linus Caldwell seems like a particularly logical choice. The original Ocean's Eleven framed him as the young, up-and-coming thief on Danny's crew, and the trilogy portrayed his growth into a confident and self-sufficient criminal mastermind. Given that arc, he can now serve as a mentor and guide for the members of Debbie's crew.

With all of that said, despite Matt Damon's promise that there is going to be multiple cameos in Ocean's 8, it also sounds like we shouldn't start to think about former characters taking on central roles in the plot. The Jason Bourne actor's remarks indicate that he only worked on the film for a single day, with the emphasis still placed on the female characters at the core of the story, rather than an extension of the ensemble seen in the first three Ocean's movies.

The Touching Way Stan Lee Was Honored At The Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Premiere

While Stan Lee is credited with being part of the creation of an insane number of comic book superheroes, the one he will forever be associated with is Spider-Man. The character is by far the most popular one created by Marvel Comics, and so it's only fitting that at the world premiere of the latest film about the character, a tribute would be paid to the creator. Pins were handed out at the premiere of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse over the weekend which displayed Stan Lee's trademark aviator glasses. Check it out below.

It's a simple enough thing, but for those who know what it means, nothing else is necessary. Stan Lee was rarely seen in public without his sunglasses, many of his movie cameos made use of them, so there's probably no more perfect symbol of the man than the glasses.

Stan Lee passed away on November 12 at the age of 95 and millions of fans are still in shock. While the man had led a very fulfilling life, and due to his advanced age, we all knew the end was somewhat close, it never prepares you for losing anybody, whether it's somebody you knew or just somebody that you felt like you knew.

While Stan Lee was best known for his work on Marvel Comics, he built a second career for himself as a movie star thanks to his regular appearances in the movies based on the characters he helped create. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is the next Marvel film to hit the screens and while it's not a Marvel Studios production, and also isn't live action, that didn't stop Stan Lee from making an appearance.

He also made an animated appearance in Disney's recent Ralph Breaks the Internet. When he appeared on screen during my press screening, the audience let out an audible sigh.

It also won't be the last time that we see those trademark sunglasses, as Stan Lee will also appear in Avengers 4 next May as he had already filmed his cameo scene before his death.

The fact that there will be future Marvel movies where Stan Lee won't cameo is almost difficult to think about. Seeing Stan appear in the films was always a highlight of every trip to see the next chapter of the MCU. I can't help but wonder if Stan's cameo might be replaced by some sort of regular Stan Lee tribute moment, maybe something involving a pair of aviator sunglasses.

Whether or not this pin will be made more widely available isn't clear. It's probably just something special for the few lucky enough to attend the film premiere, though certainly there are a lot of fans who would love to get their hands on the pin as their own way of remembering Stan Lee.

Of course, we don't need a pin to remember Stan Lee. It's something we will do everytime we read a Marvel comic or watch a movie. Every time we see him on screen we'll remember.
