The Top 10 Movies Of 2018, According To CinemaBlend

We here at CinemaBlend love movies. It's kinda why we dedicate a significant part of our lives to the medium. Every year members of our staff go out to see all kinds of features on the big screen -- each one enriching our personal palettes, changing our perspectives, and serving at least some entertainment value. Fortunately, 2018 was an amazing year to go to the local cineplex, as each month from January to December has offered up at least one special title that we are still talking about today.

Naturally, each member of the staff has different views on what movies are the best of the year, but this feature is based on our average grades for each film. In order to qualify, each title had to be seen by at least three writers, who were asked to grade every new feature they saw in 2018 with a score out of five (it's worth highlighting that 219 new releases this year were seen by at least one member of our team). After crunching the numbers we got a Top 10 -- and you can find the results below!

T-#9. Bad Times At The El RoyaleAverage Score: 4.25/5Drew Goddard made one of the most auspicious directorial debuts of recent memory back in 2012 when he delivered us The Cabin In The Woods, and we've been hungrily awaiting his next effort ever since. Thankfully, he didn't disappoint with Bad Times At The El Royale, which is a twisty, dark, and wonderfully complex feature the likes of which we rarely see in modern cinema.

The clever, non-linear script is wild, packing extra punches with surprising reveals evoked simply from alternate perspectives, and the cast is one of the best ensembles of the year, with Jeff Bridges and Cynthia Erivo in particular stealing the show. Goddard continues to fascinate as a filmmaker, and we'll continue to sit on the edge of our seats in anticipation of anything he's cooking up.

T-#9. Eighth GradeAverage Score: 4.25/5It's hard not to love a great coming-of-age story, as the best examples of the genre succeed because of their immense relatability. When we recognize and know exactly what a young protagonist is dealing with, it creates a special kind of bond between viewer and cinema that is found in few other kinds of movies. In that respect, Bo Burnham's Eighth Grade is most definitely an exceptional representation for the storytelling style in 2018, and has landed in ninth place with five votes cast.

It doesn't exactly have the splashy action, thrills, and belly laughs that a lot of the other titles on this list do, but what it does deliver is miles of heart, and an awesome breakthrough performance from star Elsie Fisher. Bo Burnham is already a recognizable name in many households, but he's now launched an impressive new career as a writer/director.

#8. Deadpool 2Average Score: 4.2308/5We're huge Deadpool fans here at CinemaBlend. As a staff we love the ridiculous antics of the Merc With The Mouth, which is why his first movie back in 2016 also made our site's Top 10 list. With an average score of 4.4 out of 5, Deadpool ranked as our ninth favorite of the year, our team appreciating the witty writing and phenomenal performance by Ryan Reynolds. Fast forward to May 2018, David Leitch's Deadpool 2 arrived to great celebration as well, and while its average score is a bit lower, it has landed one spot higher in the rankings.

The best follow-ups are those that capitalize on what worked best in the original without overdoing the duplication, and Deadpool 2 is a perfect example. The movie instead doubles down and enhances everything that is great about the lead character, and introduces some amazing new friends with Cable (Josh Brolin) and Domino (Zazie Beetz). Even in an amazing year for comic book adaptations this one still very much stood out.

#7. Mary Poppins ReturnsAverage Score: 4.25/5The original Mary Poppins is a childhood staple for a reason. There are few family films that can sweep you away quite like it, with the magic of Julie Andrews' titular nanny both wowing and inspiring. Given the impact of the 1964 original, you'd think it would have been impossible to recapture the spirit for a sequel 54 years later, but impressively that's exactly what Rob Marshall's Mary Poppins Returns does.

There is plenty to love about the film, from its amazing musical numbers to its fantastic blend of live-action and classic 2D animation, but ultimately it's all about Emily Blunt's performance. She unquestionably had a lot to live up to, but she bears the weight with perfect grace and class -- evoking the exact same energy as her predecessor.

#6. HereditaryAverage Score: 4.3125/5After a phenomenal 2017, the horror genre continued its impressive on-going boom this year, as we saw not only more big box office hits, but also a high level of quality. There are a lot of great titles that didn't make this list, including Suspiria, Halloween, and Annihilation, but Ari Aster's Hereditary most definitely deserves this spot after scaring the hell out of us this past summer.

Toni Collette delivers legitimately one of the best performances of 2018 (one that seems like it's destined to be overlooked), and it's shocking just how long the film can maintain keep chills running up and down your spine. It also features what is unquestionably one of the most horrifying and memorable recent big screen surprises, leaving viewers with an image that will leave an impact and influence nightmares for years.

#5. Avengers: Infinity WarAverage Score: 4.3333/5In the last 10 years the Marvel Cinematic Universe has revealed itself as an immensely special pop culture force of nature. Never before have we seen a big screen franchise dedicate itself so fully to such a massive continuity, all the while expecting audiences to follow along, and the results have been unbelievable -- both in terms of quality and box office. Joe and Anthony Russo's Avengers: Infinity War is the latest capstone to really drive that point home, and we're still shaking from the experience.

This is a story primarily driven by a giant purple alien questing to kill half of all life in the universe, and what unfolds is an epic and unforgettable movie experience featuring dozens of characters audiences have spent years falling in love with. This one was seen by more members of the CinemaBlend staff than any other this year (big surprise), and nobody gave it less than a four.

T-#3. A Quiet PlaceAverage Score: 4.375/5What is it about great comedic actors somehow becoming awesome horror directors? Last year it was Jordan Peele totally blowing us away with Get Out, and this year it was John Krasinski a.k.a. Jim Halpert putting us on the edge of our seats with A Quiet Place. The premise is simple -- horrifically fast and dangerous aliens arrive and kill anything that makes a sound -- but it's orchestrated phenomenally and anchored by a brilliant ensemble and fantastic script.

Another excellent entry from the on-going horror boom, A Quiet Place is shockingly scary from beginning to end, and even though there is extremely little dialogue it's impressive how well we get to know and start to care about the characters. Its world-building is contained but excellent, and we are waiting on the follow-up with baited breath.

T-#3. RomaAverage Score: 4.375/5It's been five years since Alfonso Cuaron made his last feature, but Roma is a film that ultimately proved most definitely worth the wait. The new movie couldn't be more different from his last feature, the space-set, intense thriller Gravity, but what he offers with the tale of a young woman living in Mexico City is far more subtle and equally beautiful.

Roma isn't a film that is heavy on plot, simply chronicling the simple-yet-extraordinary life of a housekeeper named Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio) after she discovers that she is pregnant, but the tale it weaves is wonderful. The black-and-white cinematography is absolutely gorgeous, and while playing primarily on Netflix, is worth seeking out on the big screen if you can.

#2. Paddington 2Average Score: 4.4375/5There's a lot of animosity and acrimony in the world nowadays, and sometimes it's great to have a film that can carry you away from all of it, and let you live in a fantasy of pure feel-goodness. For 2018, Paul King's Paddington 2 is that film. Its predecessor was a shocking bit of enchantment, released back in 2014, and the follow-up is the cinematic equivalent of a warm blanket on a long, cold winter's night.

While "whimsical" can be the adjective reserved for Mary Poppins Returns, the word "delightful" is probably the best way to describe Paddington 2 -- a story that takes the titular talking bear (Ben Whishaw) on a weird adventure searching for a special London pop-up book for his Aunt Lucy's 100th birthday. Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, and Peter Capaldi are all once again wonders, while new additions like Brendan Gleeson and Hugh Grant add a fantastic charm that is just the right touch.

#1. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-VerseAverage Score: 5/5This was a big year for Spider-Man on the big screen. Through the first eleven months of the year we not only saw him battle aliens in outer space and turn to dust, but also saw his good name a bit desecrated due to association with Venom. Because of this, we didn't fully know how to prepare for the arrival of Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse -- but it turned out it didn't matter. This is because the movie is a phenomenal and unique vision for which nobody could have properly prepared, as it stands not only as one of the best superhero films of all time, but also one of the best animated features ever.

The way in which Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse cuts to the core of what makes the webslinger such a special entity in pop culture is the beating heart of the movie, but truly this is a cinematic adventure that has everything. The performances by the fantastic ensemble and script are both hilarious and emotional, and visually it's unlike anything human's eyeballs have ever encountered in a multiplex. Every single person on our team who has seen the film has given it a five-out-of-five -- which made it an easy win as our number one film of 2018.

Jason Momoa Says 'Swimming' Through Air For Aquaman Was Not As Fun As It Looks

Jason Momoa Says 'Swimming' Through Air For Aquaman Was Not As Fun As It Looks

DC's live-action universe has had a bumpy road to theaters, with plenty of peaks and valleys since Zack Snyder's Man of Steel arrived in 2013. The next installment is James Wan's Aquaman, with the acclaimed horror director tasked with hopefully bringing DC's second critical success. The movie is breaking plenty of new ground, giving the title character his first solo movie, while also pushing the boundaries of filmmaking with its myriad underwater scenes.

Filming Aquaman sounds super complicated, with tons of wire work used in order to give the actors a sense of weightlessness, which will also be supported with visual affects. Jason Momoa was super uncomfortable, and recently joked about how bad it could get, telling the crew:

I weigh 240lbs, I can't feel my nuts! You have got to let me down! Take this damn thing off me!

Well, that's certainly an honest way to handle things. Jason Momoa is a big hulking guy, so being strapped in for extensive wirework no doubt took its toll on his body. Specifically, his private parts.

Jason Momoa's comments to Mirror.Co.Uk shows what a great character the Game of Thrones alum has. He's bringing a lot of himself into playing Arthur Curry, making the less popular hero into a bonafide badass and leading man. Rather than the butt of the jokes, Momoa brings a hulking physicality to Aquaman-- all 240 pounds of him.

James Wan had quite the task of ahead of him for Aquaman, as roughly 2/3 of the movie takes place underwater. As such, lots of movie magic was needed in order to visually make the world of Atlantis come to life. While he didn't overthink how the characters would be able to speak underwater, Wan did have to think of new ways to film each scene. Wires were used to make the characters appear weightless, and would be necessary for even the smallest movements.

After all, people aren't exactly walking around on the ocean floor-- they're swimming. Plus, their clothes and hair needed to be touched up with CGI, allowing them to float underwater.

The early reception for Aquaman has been overwhelmingly positive, praising James Wan's vision and the performance by Jason Momoa as the title character. With no Star Wars movie in theaters, the underwater blockbuster has the potential to really clean up at the Holiday box office. While Aquaman will be competing with other highly anticipated projects like Mary Poppins Returns, James Wan's movie will be the destination for action fans and Star Wars lovers who don't have a chapter to watch this December.

It should be fascinating to see how the underwater scenes function in Aquaman, and if any of the cast's discomfort reads onscreen. DC needs a win badly, so the pressure is on for Arthur Curry's solo flick to deliver.Aquaman will arrive in theaters on December 21st. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your trips to the movies in the New Year.

Jason Momoa's casting was always an inversion of public perception of Aquaman (as seen in Superfriends), but where Snyder had an Aquaman cut from the same cloth as Momoa's work on Game of Thrones or Conan, Wan utilized Momoa's zestful energy to help with pacing a globetrotting expansive adventure.

Yes, the DC superhero star may have allowed his emotions to get the better of him, but the physical pain also reduced him to tears. Momoa was required to hang from cables or dangle on wires while "swimming" through air since most of the scenes happen underwater. "I weigh 240lbs, I can't feel my nuts! You have got to let me down!

Eddie Redmayne Admits His Jupiter Ascending Performance Was Bad

Eddie Redmayne Admits His Jupiter Ascending Performance Was Bad

Actor Eddie Redmayne has had quite the incredible career, propelled by his breakout roles in My Week With Marilyn and Les Misrables, he quickly played two Oscar nominated roles as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything and Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl. Sandwiched in between his most celebrated roles is his downright strangest acting choices in 2015's Jupiter Ascending. If you sat through Redmayne's performances as intergalactic business mogul Balem, it doesn't play at the actor's strengths. Don't worry though, Redmayne knows it too. In his words:

I won a prize for it for the worst performance of the year. So, yeah, it was a pretty bad performance by all accounts.

When it comes to acting roles, not all of them can be winners. But as Eddie Redmayne recounts in his interview with GQ, he won a Razzie Award for his Jupiter Ascending role. So even when he cracked a terrible performance, he got recognized for it even if it was Worst Supporting Actor. The sci-fi box office disaster by the Wachowski siblings had Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum traveling around the galaxy with Redmayne's Balem starring as the villain. His performance featured a very specific choice to have a hushed voice, which Redmayne explained his reasoning behind:

In Jupiter Ascending, my character had had his larynx ripped out by this wolf man, and so I made the slightly bold choice, which I thought was right, of talking like this for the whole film. Which I felt sort of suited the costumes and the extremity of the world, but in retrospect, it may have been too much.

If the creepy whispers weren't enough, Balem also went into another extreme of forehead-vein-pulsating screeches making the performance... a bit much. Jupiter Ascending was a disappointment overall, as it only made $18 million in its opening weekend with a $176 million production budget. Warner Bros. might have barely made back its money with the film's overall worldwide gross of $183 million before leaving theaters. So Eddie Redmayne was just bad in a bad movie, what would have been worse was being a weak link of an incredible film.

While considering the box office numbers, not many people even saw Eddie Redmayne's performance in Jupiter Ascending, it's nice to see the actor not taking his little performance blunder too seriously and being able to move past it. The Wachowskis may have been behind sci-fi favorites such as The Matrix films and Netflix's Sense8, but Jupiter Ascending just didn't hit the right notes with audiences. Redmayne said he signed on to the film because he loved the weirdness of 2012's Cloud Atlas and never felt so free with the sibling's directing him on set.

Eddie Redmayne will reprise his much more friendly and level-headed role as Newt Scamander in Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald on November 16.

Why Pacific Rim 2 Made That Really Bold Choice, According To Steven DeKnight

Why Pacific Rim 2 Made That Really Bold Choice, According To Steven DeKnight

Pacific Rim Uprising made some pretty significant changes to the status quo of the first film, some of which haven't sat well with many fans. Now, director Steven S. DeKnight has explained why the film made its single, most significant, decision. That decision, and this is a spoiler if you haven't seen Uprising, is that the movie kills off the character of Mako Mori, the most popular character in the original movie. Steven S. DeKnight takes full responsibility for the decision, though he doesn't take it lightly. He says that the decision to kill off the character was made because the story required it, so much so that the sequence was in the movie even before the character was. According to DeKnight...

To me, at the end of the day, all other concerns must be set aside in service of the story. For example, at one point Mako wasn't even in the movie. Instead Herc was the one in the helicopter, playing the Mako role. And his fate was exactly the same.

Steven S. DeKnight takes a pretty deep dive into a lot that we didn't know about Pacific Rim Uprising on Twitter as a response to a fan who expressed his disappointment with the way Mako Mori's character was handled in the sequel. It turns out that, while Mori's fate was always going to be what it was, with her being the victim of a helicopter crash caused by a rogue Jaeger, there was originally going to be a lot more done with the death.

Originally, there were more scenes with Mako Mori in them earlier in the movie and more scenes afterward which dealt with the death, giving the big moment more weight in the film. Unfortunately, these other scenes were either cut, including a sequence where Mako explains to her brother Jake (John Boyega) what happened to Raleigh Beckett, the co-lead of the first film, and why she can't pilot a Jaeger anymore, or they were never filmed, like a massive funeral for Mori that included a Jaeger honor guard.

Interestingly, Steve S. DeKnight also reveals that in the original treatment of the movie, Mori actually survives the crash, but is still out of action for the duration.

The most painful thing that never made it before the camera was something from the original outline. In that, Mako survived the initial crash but was in a coma...Raleigh (he was still the lead at the time) drifts with her to go into her mind to pull her out of the coma. It was during this sequence that he saw the "Kaiju head" clue...This was regrettably cut because of the sentiment that coma was too depressing.

In the end, DeKnight says that Uprising was always meant to be the second part of a trilogy, and that "a concept revolving around Mako" was meant to be a big part of the third movie. The director won't elaborate on this, and one has to wonder if the reason why is because some element of this idea could still be part of a third Pacific Rim movie. Uprising clearly set up a third film, and with overseas box office numbers, the movie did quite well, so there's a decent chance we could see that third film come to life.

James Gunn Teases Rockets Character Arc Will Be Completed With Guardians 3

James Gunn Teases Rockets Character Arc Will Be Completed With Guardians 3

Major spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is on a serious high right now, riding the massive success of Avengers: Endgame. The movie is breaking all types of records, and is deeply connected to the other 21 movies before it. Endgame particularly focused on the heroes who survived Thanos' snap in Infinity War, including Guardians of the Galaxy favorite Rocket Raccoon.

Rocket is arguably the most damaged character in the Guardians franchise, perhaps sharing the honor with Karen Gillans Nebula. Thats no doubt why were they spared from the dusting, and given the chance to grow through Endgame's five- year span. And according to director James Gunn, Vol. 3 of the franchise will complete a major narrative arc for Bradley Coopers character. As he put it:

When you asked me what was saddest for me when I thought it was goneand anybody at Marvel can tell youits this very strange and attached relationship to Rocket. Rocket is me, he really is, even if that sounds narcissistic. Groot is like my dog. I love Groot in a completely different way. I relate to Rocket and I feel compassion for Rocket, but I also feel like his story has not been completed. He has an arc that started in the first movie, continued into the second and goes through Infinity War and Endgame, and then I was set to really finish that arc in Guardians 3. That was a big loss to menot being able to finish that storythough I was comforted by the fact that they were still planning to use my script.

While James Gunn no doubt has plans for all of the Guardians of the Galaxy cast, it looks like we should play special attention to Rocket when the threequel eventually arrives in theaters. Because thats the character Gunn just couldnt say goodbye to.

James Gunns comments to Deadline make a great deal of sense, considering how much of an arc Groot has already had in Phases 2 and 3. Rocket was introduced in the first Guardians movie as an angry and closed off criminal. But hes since grown into a intergalactic hero, and has a family unit in the Guardians.

Related: How Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Might Be Affected By Avengers: Endgame

In fact, Guardians 2s last shot was on Rocket. The movie leaves us with the wise-cracking Guardian watching the lights from Yondus funeral, having finally found a home.

Unfortunately that family was taken away from him in Avengers: Infinity War. Thanos assault on the galaxy hit the Guardians hard, with Gamora was murdered by her father and the affects of the snap turning Star-Lord, Mantis, Drax, and Groot to dust. Rocket and Nebula were the only survivors, and developed their own bond which should presumably have a role in the Guardians threequel.

It should be interesting to see what's next for Rocket in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. It looks like Thor might be joining the next movie, and Rocket's developed quite the relationship with the God of Thunder. The Guardians (or Asguardians?) are also on the search for the past Gamora, who had time traveled with Thanos to the epic final battle in Endgame.

Avengers: Endgame is in theaters now, complete with the second part of Rocket's arc. In the meantime, be sure to check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
