Why Star Wars Fans Are Convinced Lando Calrissian Is Returning For Episode IX

Fans have been wondering since The Force Awakens when Lando Calrissian would show up in the current trilogy. Although Donald Glover delivered on young Lando in Solo, we're still waiting to catch up with the original Lando. As we get nearer to the production start for the finale of the sequel trilogy, Star Wars: Episode IX, evidence began to mount that the fan favorite character from the original trilogy could be making his long-awaited return, with Billy Dee Williams reprising the role. Star Wars fans became convinced that Billy Dee Williams' Lando Calrissian would be showing up in Episode IX after the actor cancelled his scheduled appearance at a convention due to a "film schedule conflict."

Billly Dee Williams was set to appear at the Saskatchewan Entertainment Expo, which takes place on September 15th and 16th, but had to cancel his appearance at the Expo because of a film schedule conflict according to the event's Facebook page. Now there are a couple of reasons to think that this conflict is Episode IX. For one thing, Billy Dee Williams doesn't have any other feature-film roles lined up at the moment. And with J.J. Abrams' Episode IX beginning production soon and likely taking several months, it would tie up Billy Dee Williams around that September timeframe if he has a part in it.

This alone might not be enough to convince people that Billy Dee Williams and Lando Calrissian will be in Episode IX, but when coupled with the other rumors and evidence out there, it is looking more and more likely that we'll be seeing the swaggering smuggler again soon. At a recent convention appearance, Billy Dee Williams revealed that he had a personal trainer and a new diet and exercise regimen, something one might do if they wanted to cut a striking figure while donning a cape in space. Then, two weeks ago, more rumors came out that a source had confirmed that Lando will indeed be appearing in the next saga film. This is certainly not a confirmation, but the clues are beginning to pile up.

If Lando is going to be in Episode IX, there is no guarantee that we will even know before the film, as Yoda was kept secret prior to The Last Jedi. Yet it would make perfect sense for him to appear. Hopefully he'll have a meaty role, since he can't get away from Pinewood Studios for a quick 2-day con appearance. Luke and Han were killed off and Carrie Fisher passed away in real life, so Lando is one of the few living heroes connected to the original trilogy. If Episode IX begins with Leia's funeral as we've speculated, audiences would expect to see Lando there. Rian Johnson considered using him in The Last Jedi, but it's starting to look like J.J. Abrams may be really bringing him back.

Avengers: Endgames VFX Artists Took A Lot Of Lessons From The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy

Weta Digital has been in the digital effects game for over 25 years, and the companys most recent contribution to the cinematic landscape was in Avengers: Endgame, specifically through the explosive final battle. During my recent interview with Weta visual effects supervisor Matt Aiken, I asked him whether there were any non-Marvel movies Weta had worked on that inspired the work done on Endgame, and he informed me that there were quite a few parallels between the final chapter of the Infinity Saga and what he and his team had done on the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Aiken explained:

A bunch of us, myself included, go all the way back to Lord of the Rings at WETA Digital. That had giant battle sequences, predominantly CG battle sequences as well. It was interesting, we really felt like we were back in the territory of Helms Deep and the Battle of Pelennor Fields at times on this film, which was fun for a bunch of us whod worked on those films as well. And were using some of the same techniques and software in Lord of the Rings. Were using MASSIVE, which is the crowd-simulation software that we developed in house at WETA Digital to do those battle scenes for Lord of the Rings to do the crowd simulation work for Endgame as well. Its a way more developed version of that, but its still plenty of the same software.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has delivered some amazing battles over the last 11 years, but for now, Avengers: Endgames final conflict ranks as the biggest yet. All the major MCU heroes, from the ones wed followed along with since the beginning of the movie to those who were dusted in Avengers: Infinity War coming back to life, as well as their armies of allies, fighting the 2014 versions of Thanos and his forces. Who knows if/when well ever see a clash like this again in the MCU.

While a battle of that scale is novel for the superhero franchise, for Matt Aiken and his team, it was familiar territory for them, because even though its been nearly two decades since the Lord of the Rings trilogy launched, they were using the same software to create these large crowds back then as they did for Avengers: Endgame in the last year or so, albeit with many improvements.

However, the trick with creating these kind of fights isnt just plopping large crowds onto a battlefield; its also ensuring that the combatants can stand out amidst all the action. Whats the point watching two sides duke it out if everyones actions look the same? That would be boring. Matt Aiken and his Weta team figured that out during their time on Lord of the Rings and incorporated it into Avengers: Endgame. As Aiken put it:

And then things we learned from Lord of the Rings that we were able to bring to bear here as well. The one thing we always like to do is when we have these big battle scenes is not to just treat everybody the same, so in Endgame, weve got multiple different flavors of army on both sides, both Thanos side and our heroes side. Weve got Wakandans, Asgardians, Ravagers, sorcerers on the heroes side, and weve got Chitauri, Outriders, Sakaarans, the Black Order on Thanos side. And we want to preserve the individual fighting styles for each of these sub-armies, if you like, so that when we have a clash, we can tell if its a bunch of Outriders dealing to some sorcerers, or maybe weve got some Wakandans who are able to take on a whole lot of Chitauri.

The MCU and Middle-Earths sagas are incredibly different from one another, but when it comes to VFX work, as Matt Aiken laid out, a lot of the same methods were applied to both franchises. Given technological advancement, obviously these methods were more refined for Avengers: Endgame, but overall, its like the old saying goes: if it aint broke, dont fix it.

While Weta Digital handled VFX for all the Lord of the Rings movie and the subsequent Hobbit trilogy that followed a decade later, Avengers: Endgame marked just the fifth MCU movie the company worked on, the previous ones being The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Avengers: Infinity War. Given what Weta pulled off in all those movies, Endgame especially, I suspect Marvel Studios will continue relying on its services for future installments.

Avengers: Endgames final battle definitely gave viewers a lot of moving pieces keep track of, from Captain America finally wielding Mjolnir to the women of Marvel coming together to transport the Infinity Gauntlet to Scott Langs van. Even with the good guys getting that surge of reinforcements, Thanos nearly succeeded in destroying the universe and replacing it with a new one, but Tony Stark managed to swipe the Infinity Stones and channel their power to turn all the Mad Titan and his minions to dust, though it came at the cost of his own life.

As for the Lord of the Rings franchise, obviously its time on the big screen has come and gone, but the Middle-Earth mythology will soon be explored on the small screen. Amazon has a Lord of the Rings TV series in the works, although instead of just adapting the original novels again, it will tell new stories set before The Fellowship of the Ring. Given that Weta primarily works on movies, as well as Amazon probably wanted its series to look different from the movies, its unlikely the New Zealand-based company will be brought in to work on this show, but I suppose anything is possible.

Disneyland's Ticket Price Increase Sucks But Should Make For A Better Experience

At this point, price increases at the Disney Parks have become about as common as new reasons that make us want to go to Disney Parks. Over the weekend, Disneyland made an even larger than normal increase to prices, primarily impacting the two ends of the Disney ticket spectrum: single day passes, which now run from $104 to $199, depending on time of year and the available Park Hopper option; and annual passes, which now run between $400 and $2,000 depending on blackout schedules and other factors. While I hate to see prices go up as much as anybody, I think this is probably the best option, as the alternative is an overcrowded park that is no fun at all.

Clearly, there are some significant negatives attached to to the current Disneyland pricing model. Tickets to both Disneyland and Walt Disney World are far from cheap, even buying multi-day passes which drops the per-day price, you're looking at something between $70 and $100 per day, per person. For families, a Disney vacation is incredibly expensive. There will be those that quite simply can't afford to go to Disneyland when it costs this much, and that's tragic.

I understand that we all don't have all the money in the world to spend on theme park vacations. I've never stayed in a Disneyland Resort hotel unless I was either splitting the cost with several people or otherwise had the room covered for me (it's nice to have friends who are Disney Vacation Club members) because the rooms, even at the cheapest hotels, are just too expensive. I had to let my Annual Pass go a couple years ago because the price was becoming prohibitive. It was sort of heartbreaking, because while I knew I wasn't going to be going often enough to make the pass worth owning, not having it also helped ensure that I would visit Disneyland less often.

Every time prices go up you hear from frustrated Disney fans who, whether it's their normal refrain or not, feel the need to remind everybody that this wasn't the Disneyland Walt Disney wanted. Disney wanted his theme park to be affordable to everybody. He didn't feel it should be enjoyed by only those who could afford excessive prices.

While a lot of what is said about Walt Disney, both the good and the bad, is frequently untrue, this part certainly is. He wanted everybody to be able to enjoy Disneyland. Walt is reported to have said in his day that there would always be a 10-cent cup of coffee at Disneyland, and while that hasn't been the case for some time (the park has its own Starbucks now), the sentiment is understood.

Unfortunately, it's unlikely that Walt could have ever conceived that his little experiment would become so popular. Disneyland is a bigger draw today than it has ever been in its over 60-year history, and with that popularity brings something else that's as frustrating as the prices: the crowds.

During high traffic times like the summer season and the Christmas holidays, Disneyland has been known to reach capacity. They have to close the door because they can't let anybody else in. This happened as recently as this past holiday, even after the price increases we've already seen in recent years.

If prices were more affordable, say half what they are now, then, yes, more people would be able to afford to go. The problem is that they would. Then Disneyland would just end up being a lot more crowded a lot more often. Imagine a Disneyland that hit capacity every day in July and December. What if Disneyland was perpetually 10% more crowded every single day of the year. How much fun is that?

If Disneyland is hitting full capacity when tickets cost $100 then having anything cheaper simply wouldn't be functional. More people could afford to go, but many of them wouldn't be able to get in the front gate. Those that did would be faced with massive crowds, excessively long wait times for attractions, and difficulty getting food or finding a nice place to eat it. More people would be there, and they'd all be having less fun.

If you're a regular visitor to Disneyland or any Disney park then you know the difference between a busy day and a day with light crowds. The popular rides always have wait times, but the entire vibe of the park is different when things aren't so crowded. Just being there is more fun, regardless of the number of rides you can go on in a day.

Walt Disney wanted his park to be accessible to all, but he also wanted it to be fun for the entire family. We've simply reached a point where these two ideas don't meld well together anymore. Ultimately a choice needs to be made between one or the other.

Disney has already made its decision. In the long run, more expensive tickets will help balance the crowds to some degree. Because tickets are expensive people will shift vacation plans to off-peak times. Fewer Annual Passes will be renewed. In the end, this is actually what Disneyland wants to see happen. They want fewer people to buy tickets.

Those people that do will have a better experience. Shorter lines for attractions, easier access to food and merchandise, along with the more expensive tickets, means the park will make as much, or likely more, money from the fewer number of guests.

I don't disagree that this is a frustrating choice. As somebody who loves Disneyland and Walt Disney World, I wish everybody could have the experience that I do when I go there. Of course, I feel that way right up until the point that I can't find a decent spot to watch Fantasmic.

With the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge only a few months away, Disneyland is preparing for crowds like they've never seen. The question is not "will the park hit capacity when Galaxy's Edge opens?" The only question is how many days in a row it will happen. Even with this new pricing structure, we can be sure that it will.

The cheaper the tickets, the harder it will be to actually get a chance to experience the new Millennium Falcon: Smuggler's Run ride, or find a seat in the Cantina. There's no ticket price that won't make the first year or so of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge not insane, but perhaps there is one that will keep the insanity within reason.

For some, the new ticket prices will still be no big deal. For others, it will be a necessary evil. I certainly hope that everybody who wishes to can still go to Disneyland eventually. Even if it means scrimping and saving to get there. And then I hope that those people especially have a magical time and the crowds aren't too bad.
