Marvel's Vincent D'Onofrio Backpedals On Lex Luthor Comments

In the recently released Daredevil season 3 on Netflix, Vincent D'Onofrio once again proved why his Kingpin is one of, if not the greatest MCU villain. Seemingly in recognition of this, the actor was asked if he would be interested in playing another Marvel character, to which he responded that he wouldn't, and would instead play Superman nemesis Lex Luthor over at DC. Now the actor has backpedaled a bit on those comments, as you can see below.

In case you missed Vincent D'Onofrio's original comment, here's the response he gave in full when asked what other character he'd like to play on Daredevil:

I wouldn't. I'd jump over to DC and play Lex.

It seems like Vincent D'Onofrio didn't quite realize that his simple hypothetical response to a fan question on Twitter would cause such excitement about something that isn't actually happening. Those ignoring or not being made aware of the context of the tweet could have quickly fallen down the rabbit hole to 'Vincent D'Onofrio Cast As Lex Luthor' headlines. It appears Vincent D'Onofrio took it all in good fun, but perhaps thought it prudent to delete the tweet before such conclusions were jumped to.

In the digital age, especially on social media, what people say often gets taken out of context, so it makes sense that Vincent D'Onofrio backpedaled a bit so as not to allow a comment he probably didn't put a lot of thought in to to get out of hand.

Even if Vincent D'Onofrio didn't expect people to run with the idea of him as Lex Luthor, getting started on fan art and the like, it's easy to see why the mere notion caused such excitement.

On Daredevil, Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk is everything you could want from a great comic book villain. He's evil, terrifying and powerful, posing as much a mental threat as a physical one. But he's also a complex and, at times, sympathetic character, with a difficult past and positive qualities like his unconditional love for Vanessa. Vincent D'Onofrio conveys all of this in his performance, making you both hate Fisk and feel sorry for him.

So needless to say, having an actor of his caliber play Lex Luthor, or any character for that, matter would be an easy thing to get behind. And since he's also bald as the Kingpin, it makes it easy to imagine the actor playing the equally chrome-domed Lex Luthor.

Luthor and Fisk aren't entirely dissimilar characters either. They are both at times public figures and pillars of the community; roles that mask their dastardly deeds as criminal masterminds. Lex Luthor isn't traditionally the hulking brute that the Kingpin is, but Lex Luthor isn't usually portrayed the way Jesse Eisenberg played him in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice either.

That is perhaps part of what made Vincent D'Onofrio's hypothetical so alluring to fans. With the status of Henry Cavill's Superman unknown and really the DCEU as a whole in a constant state of flux, it doesn't seem impossible that Superman and his archenemy Lex Luthor will be getting rebooted before long, at which point casting speculation would begin.

Personally, I'd just love to see more of Kingpin in Daredevil and ideally, on the big screen opposite characters like Spider-Man, allowing more people to see Vincent D'Onofrio's brilliant performance as one of the MCU's best villains. But those of you interested in seeing a big screen Kingpin are still in luck, as Liev Schreiber is voicing the character in the upcoming Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

An Invisible Man Movie Is Happening, But It Won't Be A Dark Universe Movie

It wasnt that long ago that Universal Pictures was working towards launching the Dark Universe, a shared universe filled with the classic monsters that have lived at the studio for decades. The Mummy was the first entry of this franchise, but following its negative critical reception and and underwhelming box office performance, the continuation of the Dark Universe was put on hold. Now its been reported that one of the projects for the franchise, The Invisible Man, will move forward, but it will be a standalone feature.

Leigh Whannell, who directed last years Upgrade, has signed on to helm an Invisible Man reboot for Universal. This project will see Whannell, reuniting with Jason Blum, who is producing The Invisible Man through his Blumhouse Productions company. Johnny Depp, who was previously signed on to star in The Invisible Man, will not appear in this latest version of the movie, although Varietys sources say he could still appear in one of the other monster movies Universal has in development. This news also doesnt necessarily mean that The Invisible Man will be the next Universal Monsters movie to go into production, as other pitches are reportedly circulating for different characters.

In terms of the Dark Universe overall, Universal has tabled the idea of these monsters living in a shared universe. Universal is reassessing how to keep these characters relevant for a new generation, but the studio is still keen on churning out filmmaker-driven projects based on said monsters, like The Invisible Man. Peter Cramer, Universals president of production, said:

Throughout cinematic history, Universals classic monsters have been reinvented through the prism of each new filmmaker who brought these characters to life. We are excited to take a more individualized approach for their return to screen, shepherded by creators who have stories they are passionate to tell with them.

H.G. Wells novel The Invisible Man was first adapted for film in 1933. The same-named movie was directed by James Whale and starred Claude Rains as Dr. Jack Griffin, the scientist who created the invisibility formula and turned to villainy after ingesting his creation. Back when the Dark Universe was still intact, Bill & Teds Excellent Adventures Ed Solomon was tapped to write The Invisible Man reboot, but its unclear if Solomons script will still be used or not for Leigh Whannells version. Im guessing not if this latest incarnation is moving away from the Dark Universe model.

While we obviously wont know anything about The Invisible Mans quality until it actually comes out, the hiring of Leigh Whannell feels like a step in the right direction. Whannells credits also include writing various entries of the Insidious and Saw franchises, and making his directorial debut on Insidious: Chapter 3. In other words, hes experienced with the horror genre, and if theres one thing that the Universal Monsters need to be, its scary. The Mummy, on the other hand, took an action-themed approach with its story, which could have contributed to why it wasnt well received.

In fact, it was specifically mentioned in Varietys article that future Universal Monsters movies will be rooted in horror, with no restrictions on budget, tone, or rating, and no expectation that they will exist as part of a shared universe. Given Blumhouses success with horror movies in recent years, The Invisible Man will ideally be in safe hands, and if it does end up being the next Universal Monsters movie to be released, maybe the studio will give Blumhouse other properties to work with, like The Wolf Man or The Creature from the Black Lagoon.
