Skyscraper: Rate And Discuss With Spoilers

Can you smell what Dwayne Johnson is cooking? Probably not, due to the intense smoke and ash being scattered throughout his latest film, Skyscraper! With another big ticket film boasting the man formerly known as The Rock, it's another chance for fans to get their fill of the man's trademark blend of acting prowess, wry humor and action know-how! Also, it's a good time to rate and discuss what is surprisingly the only big budget project released in July to not to come out of a pre-existing property.

There have been a lot of varying reactions to Skyscraper, with critics of all stripes offering their two cents as to how well the film works. Our own Conner Schwerdtfeger added to the throng with the following evaluation, plucked straight from our official review:

Skyscraper isn't as good or exciting as the films that it pays homage to, but it's a refreshing change of pace to see a competently-made original summer action movie.

It's a thought that many seem to share, and one that will be put to the test as you, the reader, evaluates Skyscraper through your own critical lens! Could Avengers: Infinity War Make $2 Billion At The Box Office?

Avengers: Infinity War has only been out for two weekends, but it is clear the movie is dominating globally. The most recent stats indicate Avengers: Infinity War has already made $461.4 million domestically and $737.5 million internationally. If you are any good at doing math in your head, that means it has blown well past the $1 billion dollar mark. At $1,198,890,925 from the latest released numbers, the movie is already looking toward the $1.5 billion mark. But can it hit $2 billion before the end of its theatrical run?

To be specific, few movies have ever made $2 billion dollars at the worldwide box office. Movies like Avatar and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ended up with over $2 billion at the end of their respective runs. Another movie, Titanic, made $1.8 million at the box office and ended up grossing over $2 billion after other sales. However,the top-grossing summer title is currently Jurassic World, which only made 1.67 billion at the box office. Since Avengers: Infinity War pushed up its release date from May to the end of April, I'm not sure we can totally count it as a summer title, but it is certainly the movie that is really kicking off the summer season this year. (Although Black Panther, Rampage and Ready Player One all did well internationally earlier this year, as well.)

Currently, the Marvel movie is running on full steam, and the only thing standing in the way of Avengers: Infinity War right now is a stacked May slate. Not only do we have Deadpool 2 -- another superhero movie -- coming out next weekend, but Disney will be competing with itself by the end of the month. That's because Solo: A Star Wars Story is out on May 25. By then, the summer movie season will be in full swing, and Avengers: Infinity War will start to be pushed into second run theaters.

The good news for Avengers: Infinity War is that it likely won't slow down in its third week at the box office. This week, the movies hitting theaters are Breaking In with Gabrielle Union and Life of the Party, the new Melissa McCarthy movie where she goes back to college. Neither movie is playing for the same audience as Avengers: Infinity War, which means the latest Marvel flick should continue its domination unimpeded. In addition, THR reports the movie is expected to at least make $1.8 billion at the box office, so it should at least get most of the way there. The only question is whether fans will keep going once other big movies are options. Will it hit $2 billion or blow past the milestone? Will it nab one of if not the highest box office gross of all-time? These are questions to keep on your mind in the weeks to come.

Star Wars' Holochess Game Was Really Thought Out

You'd have to be a pretty hardcore Star Wars fan to recognize the game of Dejarik -- or to even know it by its name. It's a holographic chess game that's played by Chewbacca and C-3PO for 15 seconds in the Millennium Falcon, but in Star Wars pretty much nothing is without a backstory. The game made a reappearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story, and it was animated by Tippet Studio, who worked on the original game way back in 1977. The studio managed to pack the game with tons of detail, including why it looks so crummy in A New Hope.

In Solo, the Millennium Falcon is new and clean, much different from the grimy, heavily modified version we see in the later years of its service. We decided that it would be a good idea to pitch bringing back the two Holochess characters that didn't make it into the first film in 1977, as if in the Solo movie the Dejarik table was in full working order with all pieces intact. This led to capitalizing on a very serendipitous moment during the shoot where, in one shot, Chewie slams his paw down on the Holochess table in frustration. The force of the blow broke two buttons off the screen right side of the table set piece.

Tippet Studio is a production company that specializes in animation, and designed the stop-motion creatures that would become Dejarik in Star Wars. Chris Morley, the VFX supervisor for Tippet Studios, provided the story behind the game's appearance in Solo on the company's website. When the studio was first designing the monsters that would be the holographic game pieces, it had pitched 10 creatures to Lucasfilm. Only eight were chosen to be in the movie, but when the studio was brought back for Solo, they decided to give those two unused monsters their time in the sun. But how do explain the game having 10 characters in Solo, but only eight in A New Hope? Chewbacca is a sore loser and broke the game, of course.

Solo takes place years before A New Hope, so everything about the Millenium Falcon is shiny and new. That includes Dejarik, which is supposed to have 10 pieces, but Chewbacca breaks the game after losing to Beckett (Woody Harrelson). His Wookie strength causes the game to lose those two monster, leaving only eight left. It was a purely coincidental moment in the movie that Tippet utilized and pitched it to Lucasfilm.

An unplanned event that we thought would be a great opportunity to tell the story of how the two new Holochess pieces were lost from that day forward. We added some sparks, glitched off the two creatures and showed a version to Lucasfilm VFX supervisor Rob Bredow who loved the idea and pitched it to Ron Howard who ran with it. It was a great feeling to be able to embrace the magic of what we call a happy accident.
