New Marvel Theory May Connect Black Panther And Captain America

In a film full of badass moments that make you pump your fists and grin like an idiot, one of my favorite moments from Avengers: Infinity War comes during the Battle of Wakanda, when Captain America and Black Panther race out in front of everybody to get first crack at the Black Order and the Outriders. The scene showed just how similar in power and bravery these two heroes are. Now a new theory connects Black Panther and Captain America beyond just their similar heroic traits. According to the fan theory, the Super Soldier Serum that made Steve Rogers Captain America actually comes from the Heart-Shaped Herb that gives Black Panther his powers.

The theory comes from Reddit user 4DimensionalToilet (great name) and begins with the premise that Captain America and Black Panther have very similar powers of enhanced strength and speed, as we've seen in their contests together and against one another in the aforementioned Avengers: Infinity War and Captain America: Civil War. We know that Captain America's powers come from the Super Soldier Serum created by Dr. Abraham Erskine. Dr. Erskine was the only person ever to have perfected it the serum, but that was after a failed attempt that turned Johann Schmidt into the Red Skull. It was only when he joined forces with Howard Stark did the formula prove successful with Steve Rogers. We also know that Howard Stark presented Cap's shield to him. The shield is made of vibranium, which is only found in Wakanda, which makes where he got it not difficult to figure out.

Perhaps when acquiring the vibranium for Cap's shield, either himself or via a third party, Howard Stark heard about the Black Panther and his abilities. Stark being Stark, he obviously sought this as a part of his work with the military. At some point, Howard Stark could have brought this information to Dr. Erskine and set out to use the Heart-Shaped Herb to create an American super soldier. Perhaps Stark obtained it through some sort of trade or he stole it outright, but the Heart-Shaped Herb winds up being the key ingredient in the serum, stabilizing it to prevent the kind of mutations that happened to the Red Skull. So the similarity in powers between Black Panther and Captain America is a result of both of their powers being derived from the Heart-Shaped Herb.

This is definitely a fun theory that establishes a bond of origin for the two heroes' powers, but there are some things that seem to go against it being canon. Presumably the reason the serum finally worked was due to the Vita-radiation chamber and not some special ingredient in the serum. It also worked because of who was taking it. The process brought out who Steve Rogers was on the inside, the same as it made Red Skull as ugly on the outside as his internal beliefs.

There is also the matter of the Heart-Shaped Herb. Given how great Wakanda is at secrecy and hiding its true nature, it seems unlikely that they were having dealings with Howard Stark. And there's no way they would ever give him, or any non-Wakandan, the Heart-Shaped Herb. It just doesn't jibe with their isolationist philosophy or the sacred importance placed on the herb. What's more likely is that Howard Stark didn't get the vibranium from Wakanda. The vibranium comes from a meteorite that crashed in Wakanda, but other, smaller pieces could have landed elsewhere and Stark's team simply found a deposit.

Even if it's not canon, these fan theories are always fun as they drive greater investment and a more careful analysis of the MCU films. There will be no shortage of fan theories as we count down the days until Captain Marvel and especially Avengers 4, both of which have a fair bit of mystery surrounding them.

Marvel Might Not Be Giving Us A New Captain America, And That's OK

Just like in the DC Comics universe, certain characters in the Marvel Comics universe have shared the same superhero identity, sometimes at the same time. Take Captain America. Steve Rogers is chiefly known as the patriotic hero, but at other times, both Bucky Barnes, a.k.a. Winter Solider, and Sam Wilson, a.k.a. Falcon, have held the mantle. With many thinking that Avengers 4 will mark Chris Evans' last appearance as Steve in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there's been speculation that the Captain America identity will be passed to either Bucky or Sam. However, a recently-announced project indicates that may not actually happen, which wouldn't be a terrible thing.

In case you missed the news, it was reported last week that Marvel is developing a Falcon and Winter Soldier TV series for the Disney streaming service. Empire writer and co-executive producer Malcolm Spellman is attached to write this series, and like the previously-revealed series for Loki and Scarlet Witch, respectively, this would be a limited run of six to eight episodes. Just to be clear, the Falcon/Winter Soldier series doesn't have an official green light yet, though one can imagine there are a lot of MCU fans who'd want to see it.

These shows for the Disney streaming service are intended to highlight characters who wouldn't lead this own movies, and evidently Falcon and Winter Soldier fall into that category. Nevertheless, this will provide an opportunity to give these two more screen time together, arguably more so than if they were solely popping up in other movies. When we last saw Falcon and Winter Soldier at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, they'd both been turned to dust by the Thanos snap, but Avengers 4 is expected to expected to undo the Mad Titan's genocide. So it's likely that Falcon and Winter Soldier's series will take place after they've been returned to life.

Falcon and Winter Soldier's brief time together in Captain America: Civil War was a blast, as they griped back and forth, one disliking the other for how close he was with Steve Rogers (though in Falcon's case, he was also distrustful towards Winter Soldier due to his past with HYDRA). This limited series should be a good way for them to become friendlier with one another, though hopefully there will still be instances of them playfully giving each other a hard time. Conversely, the chances of one of them becoming the new Captain America don't look good.

If Falcon and Winter Soldier were sticking around in the films side of the MCU, then it would make sense for one of them to take over as the Star-Spangled Avenger, even if it was a supporting role to another hero. But now they're being prepped for their own TV series, and the original report makes it sound like Bucky and Sam will be sticking to their current superhero identities. Which is the right call, as frankly, including the Captain America element would be too distracting for a show.

If you're going to dedicate six-to-eight hours to highlighting Falcon and Winter Soldier equally, then it's not worth delving into the Captain America of it all. This shouldn't be a series revolving around these two arguing and fighting over about who gets to wield the vibranium shield. It should be about them learning how to work better with one another and learning that despite their differences, they're good fits for one another. If you throw in one of them wearing the red, white and blue uniform, then the dynamic becomes unbalanced. One character could be inherently seen as more important than the other because they're the new Cap.

Besides, it's not like we absolutely need a new Captain America going into Phase 4. The post-Avengers 4 MCU landscape is going to look very different than what we've grown used to over the last ten years, with heroes like Spider-Man, Black Panther and Captain Marvel becoming the new central protagonists of this franchise, roles that once belonged to Iron Man, Captain America and Thor, among others.

Let's also not forget that once the Disney/Fox deal goes through early next year, that means the X-Men and Fantastic Four properties will be able to be absorbed into the MCU. With all those new characters, plus folks that Marvel Studios still has at its disposal but hasn't introduced yet (She-Hulk and Nova, for example), there are plenty of new players that can be brought in. Even if it might be cool to see, there's no absolute need for someone to fill Captain America's shoes once he's gone.

Just because something happens in the comics doesn't mean that it has to happen in the movies too. The times when Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson served as Captain America were interesting and provided a sense of legacy, but it will also be interesting to see these two embark on their own adventure in a Disney streaming service series. This is a chance for MCU fans who don't follow along with the comics to get a better sense of why these two are so appealing since they finally get to be leads rather than supporting characters.

And hey, just because it doesn't look like Bucky and Sam will take over as Captain America doesn't mean that someone else couldn't inherit the identity someday. Frank Grillo, who plays Crossbones, speculated that the new Captain America could be a woman, and since Sharon Carter is still running around the MCU, maybe she'd be a worthy candidate. In any case, the MCU has more than enough on its plate for the future that having someone around as Captain America isn't absolutely necessary.

Of course, assuming this is indeed the plan, this has us wondering even more what Steve Rogers' ultimate fate will be by the end of Avengers 4. Will he die? Will he retire from protecting the innocent? Will he somehow reunite with Peggy Carter in the past? Whatever the explanation ends up being, we're approaching the end of an era.

5 Stephen King Easter Eggs Hidden In Pet Sematary

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains massive spoilers for Pet Sematary. If you havent seen the film yet, read on at your own risk.

Stephen King adaptations have been popular in Hollywood for decades, but there have been few times in the last 50 years when his name has carried as much heat as it does right now. Andres Muschiettis IT really helped kickstart the wave in the fall of 2017, and in the time since weve seen some impressive stuff come out including movies like Geralds Game and 1922, and television shows like Castle Rock. The most recent title to contribute to the trend is Kevin Klsch and Dennis Widmyers Pet Sematary but more than just adapting one of Kings most iconic books, the new film also pays tribute to the authors incredible legacy.

How so? In addition to featuring specific callbacks to the novel on which its based, Pet Sematary is also littered with Easter eggs big and small that will put a smile on the face of any Stephen King fan. As proof, weve highlighted five of them below, and well start with one that is featured toward the very beginning of the movie

Lewis Is Tired Of Working Late HoursWhen the Creed family moves to Ludlow, Maine, its seen by Lewis (Jason Clarke) and Rachel (Amy Seimetz) as an opportunity for a fresh start. After all, the former has a great new job at the local university, working normal hours at campus infirmary instead of at a big, busy hospital. Lewis even makes a specific point about how happy he is that hes no longer working the Graveyard Shift and while in context he means assigned work in the small hours of the morning, its a bit of dialogue in the film that also happens to be a callback to one of Stephen Kings early short stories.

First published in Cavalier magazine in 1970 before being collected in the 1978 short story collection Night Shift, Graveyard Shift is a quick horror tale about a group of middle class workers hired for a cleanup job in a decrepit textile mill. It's pretty horrible work, as there is a heavy infestation of rats that plague the job, but the tiny rodents turn out to be the least of the teams worries. This is because the creatures have actually managed to evolve while trapped in the building, turning into huge, monstrous, mutated creatures. Obviously we dont see any of that featured in Pet Sematary, but the nod is clearly there.

The Rabid St. Bernard StoryTypically you wouldnt think that a story about a violent, rabid dog would be appropriate fodder for a childs birthday party, and yet its that kind of tale that Jud Crandall (John Lithgow) chooses to share off-screen with an unidentified party guest during Ellies big day. Its conversation basically included as background noise, and youll only catch it if youre really listening to it. But those who do will easily catch the reference that is being tossed out, as its clear that the canine in question here is none other than the notorious Cujo, and an allusion to Stephen Kings hit 1981 novel.

In the book, Cujo is a St. Bernard who has the unfortunate fate of being bitten on the nose by a rabid bat while running around chasing rabbits, causing him to contract the disease and go feral. This turns out to be extremely bad for every person that encounters him, including a mother and son who he winds up trapping in a car on a viciously hot day. The story was previously adapted as a film in 1983, so it already has its own cinematic legacy, but now Pet Sematary has done its part to extended it.

A Familiar Pair In Rachels Parents HouseThanks to her history with her sister, Rachel doesnt feel a great deal of comfort when she goes home to stay with her parents for a spell following the death of her daughter. Its a place of genuine nightmares for her, as she is haunted by memories of her sick, cruel sibling and the nature of her horrific death. Those memories alone make the whole place feel sickeningly inhospitable, but definitely not helping matters is the fact that there is also what appears to be a painting of the Grady Sisters from The Shining hanging on the wall.

Its a blink-and-youll-miss-it Easter egg, but if you know to look for it you can easily spot the famous blue dresses in a portrait that Rachel steps past while walking through her parents house at night. Surely included because their sisterly relationship mirrors that of Rachel and Zeldas, the Gradys are the daughters of the former caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, Delbert Grady, and were murdered by their father when he was driven to madness. Its not the only reference to The Shining in Pet Sematary (well get there in a minute), but its definitely the best hidden one.

An Ominous SignThere are many classic author trademarks found in the works of Stephen King, but one of the most blatant is his frequent use of his home state as a setting. King clearly loves Maine, and as a result a significant number of his stories take place within its borders. There are some locations he uses more frequently than others, such as Castle Rock, Jerusalems Lot, and even Ludlow, but arguably the most sinister of them all is the township of Derry which gets a very brief shout out late in Pet Sematary via a highway road sign.

Those who recognize the name of the town probably felt a chill when the sign appears, as Derry is best known as the setting of IT, and is basically the town equivalent of a haunted house festering with an evil that lives below the surface. Truly, though, this is an Easter egg that actually applies not just to the story of Pennywise The Dancing Clown, but to many of Stephen Kings works, as the municipality has also been featured in books including 1994s Insomnia, 2001s Dreamcatcher, and 2011s 11/22/63.

Ellie Smashes The Bathroom DoorRemember how I said I would get back to The Shining? Well, here we are. This bit comes from the third act of Pet Sematary after Dead Ellie (Jet Laurence) decides that she doesnt want her mother to be alive anymore. The vicious nine year old starts attacking Rachel, and its shown that a bathroom door isnt much of a defense against her. Its a high tension moment, but its also easy to see the similarity between it and the part in The Shining when Wendy Torrance is trying to protect herself from her psychotic husband, Jack.

While Stephen King might not be a fan of the movie, Stanley Kubricks adaptation of The Shining made this particular moment from the book iconic, and it was hard not to watch the ending of Pet Sematary and immediately conjure it to mind. Its possible that there just arent that many ways to feature a character trying to break through a bathroom door, but were betting on the reference being intentional.
