How Jurassic World 2s Ending References Jurassic Park

Over 25 years later the original Jurassic Park is still a very well regarded film that's popularity has spawned an all-new series of films. The latest entry pays tribute to the one that started it all in a very subtle, but important way. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Director J.A. Bayona revealed that one of the final shots of the new movie, showing dinosaurs flying over California, is specifically designed to harken back to a moment at the end of Jurassic Park, and show the audience just how much has now changed in the world. One of the last shots of the movie, you see the characters Owen, Claire and Maisie in a car. And they look through a window and they see these pteranodons flying over the ocean. It's entirely the same shot that you see at the end of Jurassic Park. But in Jurassic Park it's not pteranodons, it's birds. It's like a way of telling, 'OK this is an emotional connection with that film.' We smile watching that shot, but the message is so different. It's not birds anymore, it's dinosaurs. So it's the world upside down.

If you've seen the movie or you've already had the film spoiled, then you know that the new movie really embraces the idea of the title Jurassic World at the end as dinosaurs are released into Northern California and are now running free. We see several shots of different dinosaurs who have entered familiar environments and made them feel much less familiar. This includes the shot that J.A. Bayona references to MTV, which includes pteranodons flying through the air above the Pacific Ocean.

The shot is meant to call back to a shot at the end of the original Jurassic Park. The surviving characters have made it on board a helicopter and are flying to safety. Sam Neill's Dr. Grant looks out the window to see birds flying together. It's an indication to him that they have left Jurassic Park and have reentered the world that the characters familiar with. By contrast, in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Owen doesn't see the familiar sight of birds, he sees the strange sight of flying dinosaurs. The shot is an indication that the world has changed is a major way. The world you thought you understood is now something entirely different.

Jurassic World 3 is a complete mystery at this point, but based on how Fallen Kingdom came to a close, we know that it's going to open on a world unlike anything we've ever seen.

Why Ben Foster Cut Huge Chunks Of Dialogue Out Of His Latest Movie Leave No Trace

Critics are spilling gallons of ink about Ben Foster's turn in the off-the-radar father-daughter drama Leave No Trace, which is ironic because Foster's character in the movie often has very little to say. In Debra Granik's hotly anticipated follow up to her Oscar-nominated Winter's Bone, Foster plays Will, a former soldier adjusting to life back home who prefers to life way off the grid with his daughter, Tom (Thomasin McKenzie). But when CinemaBlend spoke with Foster as he drums up awards support for Leave No Trace, he explained that the absence of dialogue for Will was a conscious choice, elaborating:

The way that I work is, I prefer to be able to see it in my mind. If I can see it, I can feel it. I'd much rather feel it than think it. When we got into it together, Debra and I, I shared essays, storybooks and photos -- anything that was bubbling to the surface. And then I came to this line in the script, which was, 'Is it a want, or is it a need?' He's talking to his daughter about a chocolate bar [in a grocery store], and she asked him is it a want or a need? ...I circled that line and I brought it back to Debra, and said, 'How about you and I look at the script with a red pen, just as an exercise, and if he doesn't need to stay it, then he doesn't say it. And let's see what we can get away with. Let's see how sparse we can get away with. Let's make his use of language as spare and as far as is what he would call belonging. And we were able to cut a fair amount of out of the script. ... I'd say we cut out about 40 percent.

That's a significant amount of dialogue chopped from a script that Debra Granik no doubt worked on for months -- years, even. And it likely changed the character drastically. But changed him in a way that fit Ben Foster's approach.

Will, in Leave No Trace, is a man who can't get comfortable in his own skin. Back from war and embracing fatherhood, Will wants to raise Tom the best way he knows how. To him, though, this means dropping out of society and living amongst a surprise group of citizens who call the woods home.

Leave No Trace continues to show that Debra Granik excels as a storyteller focused on people we don't normally see on the big screen. Much like in Winter's Bone, she has incredible control over the way that characters are presented, with their layers both visible and invisible to the audience.

So when I asked her if she immediately trusted Ben Foster's decision to make changes to Will's dialogue, she surprised me by saying no. Then she elaborated:

You have to be very careful. Because you've got to remember that someone's starting to do changes... and yes, it's exciting to change lines. It's exciting, and you can add lines and you can subtract lines, but the fact is it has to be quite sober a process. Because the lab or the instructor or the coach would say to you, 'You've just spent three years working on this over and over again. Are you really gonna make a good decision in 12 seconds on a set?' After you've actually spent a lot of years thinking about it. That doesn't mean that wonderful things -- you get to be very open. Wonderful things do happen on the set. Wonderful things happen in rehearsal. But with Ben, you know, he had good reasons for some of the reductions he wanted to make. Some of them I agreed with them. And when I didn't, I said, 'Let's try to do it both ways.'

Debra Granik went on to explain that while she can have inherent trust in an actor she has hired -- be it Ben Foster or Thomasin McKenzie for Leave No Trace, or even Jennifer Lawrence for Winter's Bone -- it's crucial that a writer-director remembers how much time has been spent honing a script before a performer got a chance to analyze it. And in addition, the script is going to get another pass in the editing room, anyhow. So rash decisions on the set aren't always advisable.

The powerful and memorable Leave No Trace shows that Ben Foster and Debra Granik made wise decisions in the process by stripping away dialogue that might have painted a broader picture of Will (and even of his daughter). But the actor, and the movie, are saying the most by saying very little at all, and that silence could carry them to awards consideration.

You can stream Leave No Trace now on virtually all of your preferred streaming platforms, from Amazon Prime to Google Play. It will be interesting to see how the movie is received as year-end critics' lists start to form, especially around the performances of the two leads, who are spectacular.





Now we are rapidly approaching the end of that Phase Three slate. Avengers: Endgame arrives in theaters this weekend, the culmination of the MCU's 11-year, 22-film journey, followed by Spider-Man: Far From Home in July, which, according to Kevin Feige, is the true end of Phase Three.

Why I'm Excited For Disney+

At The Walt Disney Companys Investor Day presentation last week, the Mouse House finally revealed what it has in store for its upcoming Disney+ streaming service, and it is a lot. Disney is coming out guns blazing with a slew of content and an aggressive price point that make Disney+ a compelling value proposition for consumers in a crowded streaming field.

Theres a lot to be excited about when the service debuts this November, from the first ever live-action Star Wars series The Mandalorian to all the MCU series to the Imagineering documentary series. And Im hopeful that classic Disney catalog animated series like Adventures of the Gummi Bears, Gargoyles and Recess will finally be available in their entirety on Disney+.

All the TV coming to Disney+ is great, but Im also really excited for the potential benefits this new platform offers on the movies front. Read on to see why.

The MCU And Star Wars All In One PlaceThe Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars are the two most successful franchises ever, and eventually they will both be viewable in their entirety on Disney+. These franchises both have a high re-watchability factor, and if youre a fan of either of them, having guaranteed access to them anytime on Disney+ is an enticing prospect.

Once Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is out, youll be able to binge all nine films in the Skywalker Saga in one place. Consider the current situation with Avengers: Endgame as well. Many Marvel fans want to re-watch some of the previous MCU movies before The Infinity Saga comes to a close, but currently you cant do that on streaming, even across multiple services. You would have to own physical copies or pay rental fees. Even as an advocate of physical media, I find this appealing, especially since Disney+ will support 4K and HDR, so I wont need to upgrade nearly two dozen movies to get great quality.

New And Original MoviesDisney has found a lot of success theatrically thanks to its massive brands and recognizable IPs. The studio makes the most successful and popular blockbusters in the industry, but thats basically all it makes. There is a sameness and safety to Disneys theatrical strategy of rotating tentpoles from established properties that is wildly lucrative, but predictable. The Disney+ platform provides the company a way to do something different, as Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Productions President Sean Bailey said at the Investor presentation:

Disney+ affords us the opportunity to tell more stories from a variety of genres. We will always remain true to the values of what a Disney live-action film offers, but were able to take some risks, which is really exciting. While theatrical box office right now is being driven by giant blockbuster events, there are amazing stories and characters that are yearning to be enjoyed by the whole family.

For a studio sometimes criticized for only making blockbusters, this is exciting. Already Disney+ has the holiday comedy Noelle starring Anna Kendrick, the coming-of-age novel adaptation Stargirl and the kid caper Timmy Failure, to name a few. Its awesome to see Disney branching out, taking risks and allowing for more creative freedom by telling different kinds of stories than it does on the big screen. Sean Bailey also indicated that the same love and care will be given to these Disney+ movies as the companys theatrical titles, and thats exciting.

Remakes Of Less Popular Disney Animated MoviesThere is an argument to be made that Disney is going for cheap nostalgia dollars by remaking its animated classics in live-action, but people love them and they are largely successful. Yet as Dumbo recently showed, not all of the studios animated classics are really built to be box office smashes. But that doesnt mean they dont deserve a solid live-action remake, and Disney+ provides a place for a smaller-budgeted remake to land.

One of the launch titles for Disney+ is a live-action reimagining of Lady and the Tramp starring the voices of Justin Theroux and Tessa Thompson. Theres also a remake in the works of The Sword in the Stone. Disney may run out of titles popular enough to be big screen blockbusters, but its catalog is extensive and has many films that could find new life in remakes on Disney+. Wed love to see Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Treasure Planet get some love too, but those two might require big screen budgets. The Black Cauldron maybe?

Live-Action Sequels And Reboots Could Have A Chance On Disney+This isnt so much a promise of Disney+, but a hope for the nascent streaming service. Disney has a long history full of great and beloved titles beyond its revered animated movies. Disney hasnt indicated as such, but it seems like an ideal place for reboots and sequels of the studios live-action properties that no longer fit within its big-screen strategy. Or more specifically, the long awaited, frequently-asked-for National Treasure 3.

Bob Iger hasnt doused hopes for National Treasure 3, and if finding a place for it on Disneys crowded theatrical calendar was a problem, that obstacle could be removed if it releases on Disney+ instead. The hope for National Treasure 3 isnt the only exciting possibility though. A reboot of The Rocketeer was in the works, and while we havent heard much about it recently, that too may be have a better chance to soar on Disney+. And that reported TV movie reboot of Hocus Pocus should really be a proper sequel dropping on Disney+ next Halloween.

No More VaultHas there ever been a more brilliant and infuriating invention than the Disney Vault? Disneys strategy of only making its animated movies available on home video for a limited time to create demand and make each re-release an event has long frustrated fans of the studios classic films. Disney has even employed this tactic in the streaming and digital realms; with the Aladdin remake on its way, the 1992 original is unavailable for streaming or digital purchase.

Like Robin Hood stealing from Prince John, Disney+ is busting that vault wide open and raiding it for subscribers. The vault program will not apply on the service and Disney+ will be the one-stop shop for fans of Disneys animated classics. That means no more searching stores or different streaming services in vain when the mood strikes you to watch one of your childhood favorites. That convenience is awesome and as someone who grew up with Disneys animated movies, it will be nice to know I can watch them all in one place.

It is still early and Disney+ hasnt even launched yet, but it already has a lot going for it. The potential for Disney+ to reward Disney fans by offering both beloved existing films and unique new movies is immediately evident and exciting.
