Men In Black International Reportedly Had Some Serious Behind The Scenes Drama

Its been seven years since the final installment of the original Men in Black trilogy came out, and this past weekend, Sony Pictures revived the franchise with Men In Black International, starring Thor: Ragnarok duo Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. Unfortunately for all parties involved with this spinoff, it failed to impress either critically or commercially, opening at a mere $30 million domestically in the latter category.

Well, much like the Hellboy reboot, apparently Men In Black International didnt have the smoothest production. THR has provided details on all the trouble that occurred during the spinoff, which included the script being changed during filming and director F. Gary Gray nearly leaving the project.

It all started when Sony decided it didnt want to move forward with the long-talked-about Men in Black/Jump Street crossover after producer Neal Moritz (who was one of the main people behind the Fast and Furious franchise until recently) refused to play ball. Since bringing back Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith for Men in Black 4 was deemed an expensive and not as forward-looking proposition, the studio decided to go the spinoff/reboot route.

Sony reportedly believed that Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompsons star power would be enough to bring in new fans, and one insider described Art Marcum and Matt Holloways Men In Black International script as good, hence why Hemsworth and Thompson agreed to star in the movie in the first place. Unfortunately, after David Beaubaire, the Sony executive whod been overseeing Men In Black International, exited the studio last summer, F. Gary Gray and producer Walter Parkes, who had a hand in the first Men in Black movie, started clashing.

Supposedly early drafts of Men In Black International were edgier and more timely, and the story was tied into the current debate surrounding immigration. There was even a point where a Beatles-like music group were the villains, and the four members would eventually merge into one being.

Evidently these story beats didnt meet Walter Parkes approval, as he oversaw rewrites during preproduction and production. New pages were being delivered to the actors daily, the rewrites stripped away what some considered to be the more modern sensibilities, and Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson ended up hiring their own dialogue writers.

Walter Parkes also stepped in to direct Men In Black International on a few occasions, and F. Gary Gray tried to exit the projects several times, but was convinced to say. The two men even fought over things like color-correction.

Interestingly enough, unlike the also recently-released Dark Phoenix, Men In Black International did not have a rough postproduction, as there were no major reshoots or public test screenings. However, two versions of the movie were tested for friends and family: F. Gary Grays cut and Walter Parkes cut. Ultimately Parkes cut was chosen because he had final say.

It was also mentioned that Sony did not provide any guidance when Walter Parkes and F. Gary Gray were feuding. A source describing the studio as an absentee landlord, and Sony chief Tom Rothman took steps to ensure that its exposure was limited.

Assuming all this information is legitimate, Id be interested in seeing what the edgier and more timely version of Men In Black International looked like. Hindsight is 20/20, but if that version of the movie had been released instead, maybe it could have enjoyed a lot more success than the product delivered to the masses, although the report noted that there appeared to be a lack of urgency to check out the movie.

Which brings us to Men In Black Internationals post-release, where the movie ranks at just 25% among critics on Rotten Tomatoes and has so far made close to $104 million worldwide. With numbers like that, its highly unlikely that International will get a sequel. That being said, one of the sources expects that the Men in Black franchise will be revisited again through another movie, as a TV series or through a streaming service, so one shouldnt look at a franchise killer just yet.

Who We Think Woody Harrelson Will Play In Venom

The general consensus since Spider-Man 3 dropped 11 years ago is that the movie's depiction of Venom, which marked the character's first live action appearance, was sorely lacking. But now the longtime Marvel villain-turned-anti-hero is finally getting a chance at theatrical redemption in his own movie, only this time, Spider-Man won't play any role in Venom's origin story (though perhaps the two could still cross paths in this continuity someday). Instead, the Venom movie is pulling from the smaller, but still meaty, mythology that that the eponymous character has carved out for himself, particularly the Lethal Protector and the Planet of the Symbiotes storylines. So far most of Venom's cast has been identified, but there are still a couple actors whose roles are being kept secret, with Woody Harrelson arguably being the biggest question mark. However, thanks to rumors and reports that have trickled in this year, as well as looking at Venom's history, we think there's a good chance that Harrelson is playing Cletus Kasady, a.k.a. Carnage.

As longtime comic book fans know, while Venom is one of Spider-Man's most dangerous adversaries, he at least has a own moral code, something that Carnage completely lacks. Having adopted the mindset that life was meaningless and that it was best to spread chaos, Cletus Kasady became a serial killer, which eventually led to him becoming cellmates with Eddie Brock, the original and most frequent host of the Venom symbiote. When said symbiote snuck into prison to break Eddie out, it also left behind an offspring, and this offspring bonded with Cletus, transforming him into Carnage. Like Venom, Carnage shares the same abilities Spider-Man has, but he's also much stronger than Venom, with part of this enhancement due to Cletus' psychopathic philosophies. Carnage definitely has a spot reserved in Spider-Man's rogues gallery, but he and Venom have also clashed numerous times over the years, hence why it seems likely that the Venom movie is laying the groundwork for his introduction.

Carnage was first reported to be appearing in Venom in June 2017, and while it was initially rumored that Rogue One actor Riz Ahmed was playing the character, it's since been revealed that Ahmed is actually playing Carlton Drake, head of the Life Foundation and host of the Riot symbiote. Venom will include other antagonistic symbiotes connected to the Life Foundation, so the main story has its bad guys covered. As far as Woody Harrelson goes, he was first said to be joining Venom last December, and then in April, the rumor broke that the actor was playing Cletus Kasady. The following month, Harrelson stated that he's in "a little fraction" of Venom, but he'd be back for "the next one," so we should't expect him to have a lot of screen time. Nevertheless, his comment suggests that he'll have a prominent role in Venom 2, and Carnage would be a great role for him.

Many Spider-Man fans have clamored for years for Carnage to appear in one of the Web-Slinger's movies, but it's doubtful that's going to happen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Venom on the board, a movie that director Ruben Fleischer says will be more violent, that's the best platform for Carnage to make his live action debut. Thanks to Woody Harrelson's profile increasing in recent years thanks to the Hunger Games movies, War for the Planet of the Apes and Solo: A Star Wars Story (to name a few), as well as his turns playing less-than-stable characters, he's more than qualified to fill Cletus Kasady's shoes. As for how Cletus could become Carnage in this continuity, a rumor back in February claimed that a scene towards the end of Venom sees Eddie Brock visiting San Quentin State Prison to see Cletus, who is under the care of Dr. Ashley Kafka. While there, part of Eddie's symbiote breaks free during Eddie's encounter with Cletus and starts making its way towards the latter, and then the scene cuts to black.

We're less than a month from finding out if this is true or not, but considering Carnage's popularity and that Venom doesn't have the biggest collection of villains, bringing Cletus Kasady into play is a good way to increase the stakes in Venom 2. We don't doubt the Life Foundation symbiotes in Venom are threatening, but when you have someone's whose already pure evil bonded with a symbiote, then things are only going to get worse. Sony wouldn't bring Woody Harrelson aboard Venom for just a minor role, so even though he's only cameoing in the movie, he has the star power to fully bring Cletus/Carnage to life if Venom 2 gets the green light.

28 Months Later? Here's What Alex Garland Says

In 2002, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland turned the zombie genre on its head with 28 Days Later, a film that took the concept of a post-apocalyptic viral outbreak and turned the adrenaline up with the deadly Rage Virus. The franchise continued in 2007 with Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's 28 Weeks Later, and that film left many wondering if and when a third installment would finally debut. There's quite a bit of enthusiasm for the series to become a trilogy (at least), but Garland recently took part in a Reddit AMA session and admitted that it probably won't happen. When asked by fans if there's a plan for another movie, Garland wrote:

Kind of, but doubt it will ever happen.

So if you are one of the many fans who has looked forward to the possibility of a third installment in the 28 Days Later franchise, then it sounds like you might not want to get your hopes up about it. Alex Garland knows of a tentative plan to do a third movie in this world (which many fans assumed might be called 28 Months Later), but now he's doubtful that it's going to happen. Like the insanely-strong infected at the end of the first movie, enough time passed, and it eventually wasted away.

The interesting thing to note about Alex Garland's response during that Reddit AMA session is the fact that there was "kind of" a plan in place to continue the franchise beyond the events of 28 Weeks Later. It wasn't just a theory, or a hypothetical story dreamed up by fans; it was real at one point. As fans will likely recall, the film ended with the Rage Virus making its way across the English Channel and into France, naturally setting up another movie in a new environment.

With that cliffhanger (we still don't know what happened to any of the surviving characters in 28 Weeks Later) tease in mind, there's room to continue expanding and try new things with this world. Alas, based on Alex Garland's assessment of the franchise, it seems more likely that imagery of the infected racing towards the Eiffel Tower provided the final punctuation for the series. Pretty bleak, right?

Despite the fact that it sounds like we probably won't get another entry in the 28 Days Later series, there's still plenty to be excited about within Alex Garland's filmography. On the heels of his recent directorial debut with Ex Machina (which went on to become a critical darling in its own right), the writer-director will soon debut his latest film, Annihilation, on February 23. Annihilation has already received strong critical buzz, so even without another installment in the pseudo zombie franchise, there's enough material here to keep genre fans intrigued for the foreseeable future.

Theres been a lot of talk about the new characters coming to the Toy Story universe in recent months, particularly given big names like Keanu Reeves, Christina Hendricks and Tony Hale are attached. Among those characters is a little guy name Forky, who is created by Bonnie on her first day of school out of trash. The soon-to-be-enlightened trash is voiced by the aforementioned Tony Hale, who shared with CinemaBlend at a recent press day that figuring out how to voice Forky was actually fairly easy thanks to a cool Pixar trick.

After getting over the shock of being asked to appear in a Pixar movie, Tony Hale revealed the powers that be at Pixar actually used voice clips of other acting gigs, including Arrested Development and Veep, to share how the studio hoped the character would look and sound in the final product.

During an interview with CinemaBlend while in Orlando for a recent Toy Story 4 press day, Tony Hale shared with us the special way Pixar pitched Forky to him, also mentioning that it was an easy sell. The actor also told us that he was just overwhelmed to be invited to join the animated voice team on Toy Story 4, also noting that perhaps a spork was not what he had in mind initially, although it all seems to have worked out very well for both the actor and the Pixar creative team. He said:

Its the same reaction I have now, overwhelmed. Forky and I really share that. He asks, Why am I here? I ask, How did I get here? I dont know whats happening. But they brought me up to Pixar and showed me a picture of a spork and I was kind of like, OK thats not what I was thinking, but lets go with it. Pixar and their magic.

He later went on to say that he wasnt sure what he was expecting from the voice gig, but it definitely wasnt to see a spork animated on a screen with his own voice from Arrested Development emanating out of it. Yes, this is really how the pitch happened. Per Hale:

I say it wasnt what I was thinking but if Im honest I probably wasnt thinking at all because I was so astonished that I was even there. I dont really remember that first meeting. I remember talking through Forky and I also remember they took clips from Arrested Development and clips from Veep and put it in animated Forky just to kind of see how he would react. And I was like, I love that.

Bonnie had to fall in love with the spork, so the character had to be one the audience could fall in love with too, and first that meant selling Tony Hale on the role.

Looking into how Pixar pitched the idea to the actor, Id assume clips from Veep in particular might have been a little too outrageous to really fit into the goal for the G-rated Pixar movie, but the sentiment is still pretty cool, particularly given that some of Tony Hales other characters do share commonalities. Still, somehow I cant see Pixar using a clip of Forky asking Veeps Jonah if he looks like "a pimp," although a clip with Forky noting I was made to understand that there would be grilled cheese sandwiches here or Im a monster! could definitely be more on brand for the little spork.
