Lucasfilm Sent Gifts To A Grieving Star Wars Fan, So Get Your Tissues

One of the benefits of being a massively popular franchise that stretches across decades through multiple mediums is it reaches a lot of people. There are plenty of people out there with an emotional connection to Star Wars, and this can come to light in some pretty touching ways. Just recently, one adult fan suffered a family tragedy, which eventually reached Lucasfilm. The studio then took it upon itself to send the fan and his children some Star Wars gifts. The fan then shared the experience over the internet to thank Lucasfilm for the kind gesture.

Over the weekend, a Star Wars fan posted a thank you to Lucasfilm on Reddit. In his post, the fan detailed his situation and how Lucasfilm went out of its way to help make his family a little happier. The Redditor, who goes by cfjedimaster, wrote that his wife had passed away two months ago and that it's been an incredibly rough time for his family. Thankfully, he has an active support system in his wife's seven siblings and his own seven children. A few weeks ago, one of his friends reached out to Lucasfilm's publicity department and told them about the situation and how what a huge Star Wars fan the man was. They weren't really expecting much to come out of an "out of the blue email" to Lucasfilm, but the studio isn't one to disappoint. The fan received two boxes full of gifts. Each of his seven children reached their own gift bag of merch, each one age-appropriate, and all the right sizes. The fan even received some stuff for himself! He didn't detail what exactly Lucasfilm sent him, but one would wager that there was a pretty sweet mix of toys and apparel.

The fan doesn't know if anyone at Lucasfilm monitors the Star Wars subreddit, but he wanted to thank them for making himself and his kids "pretty damn happy" during this rough time in their lives.

That's a really sweet story, and it's a reminder that Star Wars can be more than just some awesome movies. It's reached multiple generations over the years, and it's nice to hear that Lucasfilm can make people happy when they are feeling down.

Star Wars is bigger than ever, and there's a lot to look forward to from the franchise. Star Wars: Episode IX is the biggest thing on the horizon, and the movie isn't going to arrive in theaters until 2019. After that, it's a bit more unclear. Shazam! Easter Egg Reveals More About DCs Timeline, And Lex Luthor

Some DCEU movies contain more Easter eggs than others, and Shazam! looks like it might be one of the most self-referential DC movies yet. The film looks packed to the brim with fun nods, and a recent post by director David F. Sandberg revealed an interesting bit of information courtesy of a copy of The Daily Planet in the bedroom of Freddy Freeman. Specifically, it looks like the people of Earth may actually blame Lex Luthor and the Legion of Doom for Steppenwolf's attack on Earth in Justice League. The newspaper reporting on the alien invasion of Russia in Freddy's room says:

The Top Suspect: As a worldwide search begins for those responsible, specialists say early signs point to Lex Luthor and his associates.

It's technically not wrong. Lex Luthor technically did call Steppenwolf in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which eventually paved the way for Darkseid's uncle to show up in his quest for the Mother Boxes. That said, Justice League makes very few references to Lex, so this paper provides further insight into how Earth's citizens responded to the mysterious crisis in Russia. With the Justice League helping to pick up the pieces, blame has been placed at the feet of Lex Luthor and "his associates," which might mean the Legion of Doom teased at the end of Justice League's post-credits scene.

We should also note that the newspaper doesn't explicitly lay out if it's talking about the events of Justice League when it calls out Lex Luthor. The paper acts as a compilation of all of the significant events that have taken place in the DCEU thus far, with references to Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice also present. With that in mind, it remains entirely possible that the quote is relating to the arrival of Doomsday in Zack Snyder's previous movie, though the inclusion of the quote near more Justice League-oriented content leaves it open to interpretation.

James Wan Explains How His Horror Background Influenced Aquaman

Aquaman has often been regarded as more of a punchline than a superhero in pop culture. With the character's upcoming DCEU release, starring Jason Momoa, best known as the powerful Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones, perhaps past perceptions of the hero will change. When director James Wan was approached for Aquaman, he was acutely aware of the character's current reputation. Riding high on an immensely successful film career thus far in the horror genre, some might say Wan was taking somewhat of a risk to tread outside the waters of his proven strengths, with an often-overlooked hero and with the technical challenges of a film that primarily takes place underwater. However, the director took on the project with confidence, seeing it as an opportunity to break into the genre. Here's what he said about joining Aquaman:

There was a bit of reservation at the start about whether or not I should pursue this character. But the more I thought about it, I always love being the underdog. Coming from the horror genre, you're always the underdog. So I got used to that mentality.

James Wan has been far from an underdog in the horror genre for many years. He started the Saw, Insidious and Conjuring franchises with his direction, has served as producer for their successors and directed perhaps the most memorable Fast & the Furious entry, Furious 7. Wan's transition to the big leagues of superhero films may seem seamless, but the genre often comes with large budgets, and therefore there are higher stakes for them to do well at the box office. Wan continued in his interview with Total Film by explaining his aspirations to venture outside what he is known for with Aquaman.

I love [horror]. It's definitely the best way to break into the industry. I just became somewhat synonymous with it, so that people had a harder time seeing me for anything else outside of horror. I just wanted to prove that I'm not just a horror filmmaker, I'm a filmmaker, period.

In the interview, James Wan also cited Steven Spielberg, James Cameron and George Lucas as his childhood inspirations. With Aquaman, Wan is getting closer to making movies to what his director heroes are most famous for. The filmmaker shared that he paid homage to Star Wars: A New Hope in the upcoming release by including a Obi-Wan/Luke Skywalker dynamic moment. The film is an origin story of a hero who has been an underdog among the Justice League in popular opinion.

Warner Bros' choice of a horror filmmaker to create the underwater fantasy world for Aquaman might at first glance seem bizarre, but the studio took James Wan's impressive track record to heart, likely looking to make Aquaman the first of a successful franchise. With Wan's aspirations to become a great filmmaker who can tackle multiple genres, the hero couldn't of asked for a better director to do him justice. The next DCEU release splashes into theaters on December 21.
