The Batman Storyline Todd Phillips' Joker Movie May Be Taking Inspiration From

Out of all the DC projects currently in development, few have turned more heads than the non-DCEU Joker origin movie. The Todd Philips-directed, Martin Scorsese-produced DC film has remained mostly shrouded in mystery since its initial announcement, but now it looks like we may know more about the source material that will play into the story. Specifically, it seems like the film may pay homage to The Killing Joke by focusing on its titular villain as a failed funnyman in the 1980s.

According to a new report from The Wrap, it sounds like Todd Philips' Joker origin movie is aiming to frame the comic book bad guy with a somewhat tragic past. Specifically, this report states that The Clown Prince of Crime will be a failed 1980s comedian and that he will turn to a life of crime sometime after bombing with an audience. Such a premise naturally invokes memories of Alan Moore's 1988 graphic novel The Killing Joke, which similarly presented a possible origin for The Joker by showing him as a failed stand-up who goes insane after "one bad day" ruins his life and ends with him accidentally taking a dip in acid at ACE Chemicals, as seen below.

It's not particularly surprising to learn that Todd Philips' Joker story might be aiming to do something in the vein of The Killing Joke. Alan Moore's text has become widely regarded as one of the most influential and iconic Batman stories ever written, and the comedian/acid bath origin has become the go-to Joker origin story across a wide variety of media. Beyond that, The Killing Joke has inspired several cinematic projects over the years, providing DNA to Tim Burton's Batman and David Ayer's Suicide Squad. It was also was directly adapted as an R-rated animated movie.

Bringing The Killing Joke into the equation also makes sense when we consider the non-DCEU status of the movie. The Joker origin film will take place outside of the current canon and timeline, which means it's free to explore the DC canon with little concern about movies like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice or Justice League. Similarly, while The Killing Joke is not quite an Elseworlds tale and its fallout did eventually go on to become canon in DC Comics, many fans still regard it as a standalone story with an ambiguous ending. If that's how the movie turns out, then all bets are off, and anything can happen.

Having said that, we still don't know much about how this movie could play with the core Killing Joke narrative. It's unclear if Batman or The Bat Family will appear, which means it might not focus on the contemporary storyline in which Joker paralyzes Barbara Gordon and tries to drive Commissioner Gordon insane. Moreover, while Joaquin Phoenix still stands as the frontrunner for the role, he has not officially confirmed anything yet.

As of right now, the Killing Joke-inspired Joker movie is aiming to begin production sometime this year, though rumored rewrites could prevent that from happening. For now, make sure to keep an eye on the DCEU when James Wan's Aquaman premieres in theaters later this year on December 21.

Fans React To The Joker Getting A Standalone DC Movie

The DCEU continues to evolve with the numerous creative shifts that have taken place over at Warner Bros. With that in mind, the latest development also seems to be one of the most polarizing, as a Joker movie focusing on Jared Leto's Clown Prince of Crime was revealed yesterday. The announcement generated a lot of responses online, including some hilarious commentary about how this is a suitably Joker thing to see. Check out one such remark, below.

So, as you can see from that post, not everyone is immediately onboard with the idea of Suicide Squad spinoff focusing on Jared Leto's Joker. The character proved divisive among fans when he debuted in 2016, and this move to get a film based on him made almost feels like something he would do just to troll us.

That response to the Joker movie is not the only response to surface online. Not by a long shot. In fact, following the announcement, The Wrap's Umberto Gonzalez took to social media to remark on the somewhat odd fact that two Joker movies have been announced, but Man of Steel 2 still hasn't been able to gain traction.

Those previous two responses to this new Joker solo movie were mostly humorous, but some fans seem legitimately angry about the idea of a Jared Leto Joker movie going into development. You can check out one such response highlighting the need for mystery in the character's stories, below.

Then there's just the matter of whether or not audiences actually want another Joker movie to enter development. As Batman expert Glen Weldon explained in his own tweet, it doesn't seem like everyone is going to care about that film.

Nevertheless, there have been some positive responses to this idea as well. In fact, one fan took to social media to remark on the fact that Warner Bros. arguably owes this movie to Jared Leto after cutting so many of his sequences in the theatrical cut of Suicide Squad. Moreover, they also hope that this means the Todd Phillips Joker movie won't happen anymore.

Finally, we come to one of the most positive responses of the bunch. Noting the promotion of Walter Hamada to head of DC film production, this poster said that the move to put a Jared Leto Joker movie into development represents a step in the right direction, and that this is a DCEU film worth being excited about.

Following The LEGO Movies huge success in 2014, youd think moving on to a sequel was a no-brainer. Apparently not. Everything was so awesome about the first animated film that writer/director pair Phil Lord and Chris Miller were being told left and right not to make another LEGO Movie. In Lords words:

We had friends, like prominent filmmaker friends who were like Dont do it. Dont make a sequel. But we would rather take a risk than not. Wed rather fail trying something new.

A couple weeks after The LEGO Movie was released, Phil Lord and Chris Miller that they started constructing some ideas for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part. At first, as the duo recently told io9, their colleagues in the film world didnt share their enthusiasm to bring back Emmet, Wyldstyle and the gang back to the big screen.

The eventual director of LEGO Movie 2, Mike Mitchell, even tried to talk them out of making it all together. It did come from a place of love. Mitchell said he really loved the first movie, especially the ending, and he couldnt imagine how they could build on it and make it better.

When Phil Lord and Chris Miller explained their early plans for The LEGO Movie 2 to Mike Mitchell, his mind was completely changed. He had to be part of it. So much so that he took over Lord and Millers role this time around as director, while the pair also took on producing the sequel.

While the writers of LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part didnt write the first movie with a sequel in mind, they ended up using the clever ending to the 2014 animated film as the basis for the sequel. At the end of LEGO Movie, its revealed there is a human boy running the events happening for all the LEGO characters.

Hes then interrupted by his dad (played by Will Ferrell) and told that he will soon have to share his play space with his younger sister. The LEGO Movie 2 is then all about sibling rivalry between the brother and sister, as told through the events happening with the various LEGO and Duplo characters clashing.

Sequels can be difficult to pull off, but considering that the early critical reactions for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part have been positive overall, it looks like the writers risk may have been worth it. In CinemaBlends review of the movie, our own Eric Eisenberg gave the movie 3.5 stars, calling it funny, cute, clever and emotional but not quite as awesome as the original.

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part is the first big animation release of 2019 and is expected to win the weekend at an expected $55 million gross opening when it comes to theaters on February 8.
