Dark Phoenix's Director Assures Fans The Movie Connects To X-Men: Days Of Future Past

Back in 2014, X-Men: Days of Future Past brought the original X-Men film series and the First Class series together in a time travel epic that resulted in the timeline being changed and 2023 now being a peaceful time for mutants as opposed to being hunted by Sentinels in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Since then, the main X-Men movies have kept following with the First Class characters in the past, with X-Men: Apocalypse being set in 1983 and the upcoming Dark Phoenix being set in 1992.

Its been all but confirmed that Dark Phoenix will be the final chapter of the X-Men saga that began in 2000, but lest you think this franchise has forgotten about that brighter future ahead for the mutants, director and writer Simon Kinberg stated that he has an idea about how Dark Phoenix will connect to X-Men: Days of Future Past, saying:

I have some sense of it, yes, because I always feel as though I'm sort of responsible for the architecture of this and making sure that it all lines up. So I do have some sense of it, but I really did imagine this movie, in truth, as the culmination of this cycle of X-Men films and so I wasn't really thinking past this film other than wanting to make sure that the logic was all sound.

Whether this means that Dark Phoenix will allude to or establish a direct connection to X-Men: Days of Future Past remains to be seen. However, Simon Kinbergs comments confirm that rather than X-Men: Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix establishing yet another separate continuity, which would muddy the X-Men film series mythos even more, these events are still leading towards the future shown at the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past, while simultaneously serving as the last chapter of this iteration of the franchise.

Of course, lets not forget that Logan, which takes place in 2029, revealed that no new mutants had been born in the last 25 years, and the X-Men were no more after Professor X suffered a seizure that unleashed a destructive telepathic wave, killing several mutants. So if you assume that Logan is meant to follow after X-Men: Days of Future Past, then the future still doesnt look good. However, if youd rather consider Logan a one-off tale set in a separate universe, then things will eventually become better for mutants, or at least the ones under Professor Xs care.

In any case, Simon Kinberg also mentioned during his interview with ScreenRant that it was working on X-Men: Days of Future Past that helped him conceive the idea for Dark Phoenix. Kinberg recalled:

I actually would say that the Dark Phoenix idea was was set up in the end of Days of Future Past. In changing the timeline of Days of Future Past, part of the reason I did that was I wanted a chance to tell the Dark Phoenix story in a more fulsome way where it's really like the full Dark Phoenix story and focuses on Jean's story different than X-Men: The Last Stand.

X-Men: The Last Stands adaptation of The Dark Phoenix Saga was not well-received among fans, particularly because it had to share screen time with the mutant cure storyline. For Dark Phoenix, Jeans corruption is the main attraction and like the source material, it involves aliens. Were only a couple weeks away from learning how Dark Phoenix specifically unfolds, but Jean Grey, Beast, Cyclops, Storm and Professor X (among others) are all still alive in 2023, so we at least know theyll make it out in one piece.

It's one of the premier pop culture debates of our time: Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter, or more specifically, Gandalf vs. Dumbledore. The two wizards, portrayed by Ian McKellen and Richard Harris/Michael Gambon, respectively, are iconic characters in two of the biggest franchises of the 21st century. So naturally, being in such a huge movie means that people come up to you on the street and ask about your time as a powerful wizard. Yet those people may not actually know which wizard you played, as Gandalf actor Ian McKellen has found out. The acclaimed actor apparently gets mistaken for that other wizard all the time, as he explained:

People come up to me and say 'My son's seen all the Harry Potter movies' because they think I'm Michael Gambon. When Richard Harris was ill, I was asked if I'd consider being in the movies [as his replacement] and I said, 'Absolutely. But I never heard anything else about it. Before Richard Harris died he took time out to tell the world that he thought certain actors were rubbish -- and my name was on this rather short list. With Kenneth Branagh's. I was in good company.

I wonder if, when a fan first comes up to Ian McKellen, he guesses whether or not they'll be a Lord of the Rings fan or a Harry Potter fan. It's funny because it's not like he was in some small film as a wizard either, The Lord of the Rings movies were huge, and he was in The Hobbit trilogy as well, so it's not like there is a lot more Dumbledore onscreen or anything. I guess these parents just recognize Ian McKellen as a famous actor that they know played a wizard and they know that their kid watched Harry Potter, so they conflate the two things.

It's ironic that Ian McKellen gets mistaken for Dumbledore when it was once a possibility that he could have played that character as well as Gandalf. However, as he told Time Out, original Dumbledore actor Richard Harris apparently didn't approve of his acting and he couldn't take on the role formerly played by an actor who wasn't a fan of his. So the role ultimately went to Michael Gambon, and now Ian McKellen is always reminded of the wizard he wasn't.

What's also funny about this is that I'm pretty sure Ian McKellen doesn't regularly walk around with a wizard-sized beard, as he is usually clean-shaven or only rocking a little facial hair. Given that, you would think that he might be more recognizable and have more fans coming up to him about his role as Magneto in the X-Men movies. Although maybe if he had his Gandalf beard he wouldn't be mistaken for Dumbledore as much. Who can say. But it isn't just Ian McKellen who gets asked about a character he didn't play. Curious if this mistaken case of magical identity goes both ways, and if Michael Gambon gets people coming up to him about Gandalf, Ian McKellen actually asked him:

I asked him if he ever gets confused with me. He said, 'Urgh, all the time.' I asked him what he did. He said, 'Oh, I just sign your name.'

So this isn't just a case of Harry Potter fans suffering the effects of a Confundus Charm; Lord of the Rings fans are also mixing up their actors, not knowing the difference between one of the Maia and a schoolteacher. I like that Michael Gambon just signs Ian McKellen's name. This probably happens with such frequency that he stopped trying to correct people and found it easier to just go with it.

The Dumbledore/Gandalf debate is likely to rage on for years to come, and these two beloved franchises aren't going anywhere, with each having new stories in the offing. Amazon is working on a massive Lord of the Rings TV series for its streaming service, and Ian McKellen didn't rule out a return to his iconic, and occasionally mistaken, role. On the other side of the fantasy spectrum, you'll be able to see a young Dumbledore played by Jude Law in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, in theaters on November 16.

How Linda Cardellini Got A Funny Scooby-Doo Reference Into The Curse Of La Llorona

As Warner Bros. The Curse of La Llorona works its way to theaters this weekend, fans of The Conjuring universe will be scouring the backgrounds of scene looking for references and Easter Eggs to the larger story at hand. (And they are there, trust us.) But while paying attention to the background details in director Michael Chaves horror-thriller, we spotted a different reference that made us laugh, and we had to ask the cast about it.

The Curse of La Llorona takes place in the 1970s, where a social worker (Linda Cardellini) who is concerned about the welfare of some small children begins to investigate the mothers claims that they are haunted by La Llorona. More on that myth in a moment, but in the background of a scene, kids are watching Scooby-Doo on a TV set. Makes sense. The animated show was huge in the 1970s. But theres also a subtle gag there in that Linda Cardellini also played Velma in two live-action Scooby-Doo movies, and she told us it was her idea to get that animated reference in. She tells CinemaBlend:

Actually, it was a discussion too, when we were talking about it. And I was like because it was a different Hanna-Barbera cartoon that we had in one version, and I was like, What if theyre watching Scooby-Doo? And we just had a laugh about it. It was sort of like a little Easter Egg, I think.

These self-aware nods are hilarious to film lovers. Going into the movie, its fun to know that Linda Cardellini established her range on a popular family comedy like Scooby-Doo before switching gears, time and again, to show exactly what she is capable of as an actress. Sure she played Velma. But since then, Cardellini has impressed critics and crowds with roles in Brokeback Mountain, E.R., Mad Men, the Avengers movies, and most recently on the Netflix drama Bloodline.

As she elaborated in the Scooby-Doo nod, she explained how that movie helped her switch gears and challenger herself as an actress. Cardellini told us:

That was, to me, I had just come off of Freaks and Geeks, and so doing something like Scooby-Doo seemed like a crazy departure, playing Velma. And [this] was like, I had just come off of Daddys Home and then I decided to do this film. I just love that about acting, so it was fun for me.

Audiences will see a new side of Linda Cardellini in The Curse of La Llorona, as she plays a caring social worker who gets pulled into a terrifying mystery. She also, as a result, has to protect her own children from the threat of La Llorona, and Cardellini displays a ferocious Mama Bear side that we hadnt seen from her before.
